[FRC Blog] 2022 RAPID REACT Audience Displays

Why they got us catching strays with the red card :joy:

Floating graphics > non-floating graphics

They generally don’t release them, preferring to debut them at the events in person.

I’ve always wished they had a small number beside the team number on the match score display that displayed the teams rank. It would be nice to be able to see what ranks were playing against each other during the match.

I just wish the text could be a little bigger. I have trouble reading the little numbers from a distance.

I’m thankful for real time scoring in general, though. This year should be more spectator friendly than average.

I guess you guys answered the question ā€œwhat can brown do for you?ā€

And yet FedEx is a much bigger sponsor of FIRST.

Now, we won’t be able to say ā€œStat Thatā€ after each match (thankfully!)

I think that ā€œbrownā€ is supposed to be a dark gold.

I like this navy color as well, pops better to be able to read key segments.

Overall, I would love it if they did lower/upper horizontally to be able to make them bigger, even if there were some other indicator (rectangle vs funnel shape makes sense, or maybe lower-corner up/down arrows). I’ll make an ugly mock-up of this and edit it into my post when I have a moment.

I think this screen will look fine on a webcast or at a regional with the big screen up on the curtain, but at a district where displays are usually smaller / in odd places / blown out by the school’s ceiling lights, the scoring numbers will be really hard to read at the small size in this vertical orientation.

EDIT: Graphic Design is my passion

This sucks, but it took me maybe two minutes to do. I started by matching the original shapes / sizes in google drawings, then scaling them up to fill the same amount of space. I was able to take the font size from a 15-pt to a 27-pt - just as a quick gauge of how much bigger I could make the scoring info. It’s probably too big since it overshadows the central ā€œVSā€ score, but it was worth a shot.

While I definitely like this better, it does lose the ā€œlook guys, the upper hub score is directly above the lower hub scoreā€ factor. Now is that actually a problem? Probably not.

I absolutely prefer the larger typeface though. Don’t want to bring a telescope to matches.

The main VS score could be made larger if they did w/o the redundant RP dot.

Also, what with the tomato and all, maybe they should see if they can get Fazoli’s as a sponsor

I had to go back and look to verify that it wasn’t

Here’s one that I tried to imitate the triangle art from the final score display. Nothing too big.

This one is harder to tell numbers but easier to tell you got the RP.

This is, as the kids say, :fire: :fire: :fire:!

I love the rounded off rectangles for the cargo bonus. It’s a small change that brings it more in line with the appearance of modern UI.

My only tweak would be to change the top bar to black. This would further unify the look with the Final Score display and help make the audience displays feel like a cohesive system.

Oh, they notice. FIRST employees are not allowed to post on CD, but that does not mean they don’t lurk here anyway. They like robots too!

I did a design that looks considerably different (without numbers because this is in a free online program instead of the one I really like), but it has to be better than FIRST’s because theirs sucks. There’s a few easy changes that could be made to make it more readable from the driver’s stations, but overall it looks a lot more pleasing to the eye.

Plus, they didn’t even bother to try using anything from the FRC graphics or color scheme and just used the FIRST Forward color scheme (which is what has that god-awful brown color) and chose the worst color from the five they could choose from as the background.

This thread has shown that there are a lot of great designers with a lot of opinions about how the display should look. I don’t see why FIRST wouldn’t make this a design competition (like the animation award) this gives teams an input and doesn’t require a design resource at FIRST to do the work (not saying judging this is free, but I would sure think easier right?).
