Awards Shows

Apr 27, 2020 | Written by Frank Merrick.

So many exciting award shows this week!

Some Districts have already announced their awards. For those who have not, check out the details on this page.

The 2020 FIRST Robotics Competition Regional Awards show will start on Wednesday, April 29, at 7 PM Eastern Time. Be sure to catch it here. With the number of awards we are giving out, we’ll be breaking the show into three segments. See the list of what regionals will be announced when on this blog.

Finally, don’t miss the FIRST Virtual Showcase at 10 AM Eastern Time on Saturday, May 2, on FIRSTtv. This cross-program show will feature:

  • FIRST ® LEGO® League Global Innovation Award Semi-Finalists
  • FIRST ® Tech Challenge Compass Award, Promote Award and Dean’s List Awards
  • FIRST® Robotics Competition Dean’s List Awards, Woodie Flowers Award and Chairman’s Awards
  • Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Awards
  • Remarks from Dean Kamen and other special guests

So much FIRST goodness this week – I hope you tune in!

Frank

Are these the awards that would normally be given at the Championships? (i.e. Chairman’s inducts you into the HoF)? Or just more awards from regionals?

Are districts awarding DCCA during their awards shows or just DCA?

PNW did DCA’s for each district event. I think DL/WF was DCMP level though.

I believe these are for the Regionals which did not happen. I don’t think I have heard what the plan for World’s level awards is.

May 2nd is for the World Level Winners of everything I believe. I do know that for sure that they’re announcing the Dean’s List and Woodie Flowers World’s Winners at that time, but Chairman’s, I’m not 100% on, but I think it’s safe to assume that they’ll be announcing the Hall of Fame teams then too.

That’s what I assumed as well. But if districts aren’t awarding DCCA then I can’t imagine that they would be awarding CCA to only the regional teams. Maybe this year they’re allowing anyone who won a DCA to “compete” for CCA, but I’m pretty sure they haven’t said that anywhere.

Edit: I asked in a comment on the Blog post, we’ll see what they say.

I don’t think they’ll let all district winners compete for the Championship though, because the filtering process makes it easier for the FIRST headquarters staff to get through the State and Regional winners. It would elongate the process a lot more if they took on deciding between all of these teams themselves - I think they’re going to leave it to each state/regional to pick their winners. Perhaps we’ll only hear the state winners during the showcase for Chairman’s. For the Michigan “Online State Championship” at least, they’re announcing district chairman’s winners along with the State Level Champions for everything else like Dean’s List and Woodie, so they might just announce State Chairman’s at Worlds and then do something after for Hall of Fame? Not too sure

My understanding is that Dean’s List winners at the district event level was announced to teams via an email to lead mentors, and only the DCMP level winners were then announced on the livestream, at least for PNW.

Yeah this is right. All the District Dean’s List Awards have been announced so far and the State Dean’s List Winners are being announced through individual state/regional Award ceremonies. I think the other award decisions are still pending because for awards like Chairman’s judges need to go through all the weeks in a consecutive order to decide who wins the events the following week. So like week 5 winners need to be decided to start week 6 deliberations. This might be why Chairman’s is taking so long.

Have to be honest here, alittle disappointing our students hard work is going to be announced via a Facebook post.

Relieved that you said this - I thought the same thing but didn’t want to seem ungrateful for the efforts they’re putting in with Covid-19 going on. All State Championships except Michigan seem to be having an award livestream, so at least there’s that.

Yeah crazy and disappointing the largest District/Area in FIRST is not doing anything other than a FB post. Hope this changes.

Perhaps the video they’re talking about is similar to the live-streams other states are doing?

here on Facebook.

Kinda sad that the students won’t be able to see that.

That’s actually right, I didn’t think about how a lot of students might not have Facebook. Hm well maybe mentors will have to send the video to their team’s slack or email chain if students can’t view it without a facebook account. FIM’s account is public so it might not be a problem.

There will be no Chairman’s Award awarded at the championship level this year. I.e. No hall of fame entry for 2020, only Regionals, Districts, and Distict Champs. More info here: https://info.firstinspires.org/updates-3-27-20

Edit: quote from the link

FIRST ® Robotics Competition Chairman’s Award
FIRST Robotics Competition is committed to recognizing the impact that teams have had on the community. For that reason, the Chairman’s Award will be selected and presented for all Regional and District events that have been suspended. Recognizing our Chairman’s Award winners in the short term has no impact on decisions regarding the suspended events in the long term.

  • Given that the safety and health of our participants is our number one priority, FIRST will select winners based solely on submitted essays.

  • Since the 2020 FIRST Championship has been canceled, FIRST Championship Chairman’s Award Winners will not be selected for the 2020 season. Decisions about advancement to the 2021 FIRST Championship will be made later.

  • Additional details can be found in the FIRST Robotics Competition team blast, which will be sent later today and archived here.

Interesting. Then I wonder what Chairman’s Awards they’ll be giving out on May 2

It is worth noting that this link was published a full month before Monday’s FRC Blog. Perhaps FIRST changed their mind regarding awarding CCAs since then?

Unfortunately I doubt they’ve changed their mind. They only awarded District Chairman’s Awards at the FIRST In Michigan Awards Livestream yesterday, so I’m assuming that State Awards will be announced on Saturday. If they were going to announce Hall of Fame on Saturday, they most likely would’ve made their State/Regional Winner decisions by now and have told it during the State/Regional Award Shows :disappointed:

Half an hour into the show, I think they did a good job putting it together… with one exception. Each event follows the same pattern:
Here’s what makes the VOY special, and who they are!
Here’s what makes the WFFA special, and who they are!
Here are the names and teams of the DL finalists.
Here’s what makes the CA team special, and who they are!

One of these things is not like the other, and I for one would like to know a little about what makes the DL finalists special.
