[FRC Blog] Event Registrations, Behind the Lines, and Drive Base Opt-Out

A Comprehensive Summary of the District Event Registration Experience Today

Dope.

A More Comprehensive Reminder about Regional Event Registration Tomorrow

Regional teams, your event registration for Regional events starts at Noon Eastern time tomorrow, Thursday, October 6th. Don’t miss it, or people will call you an L7*! More info.

Behind the Lines

Believe it or not, event registration isn’t the only thing going on this week!

Episode 1 of Behind The Lines is going to air live tonight, October 5th, at 8PM Eastern Time. They’re going to be discussing how to improve your team year over year, and defining and attaining goals that are right for your team, with Gabe Salas from #FIRSTChampLIVE and Steve McKinney from 987, the 2016 Chairman’s Award winners and former World Champions.

Watch and participate at twitch.tv/frcgamesense! They’ll answer questions they find interesting from the chat. Uninteresting questions will relegated to the dustbin of history.

If you happen to miss the show (Whaaaaat???), you’ll be able to watch it anytime from the FIRST Robotics Competition Resource Library, where previous seasons are archived.

Drive Base Opt Out

Once again this year, veteran teams are able to choose an AndyMark voucher instead of the Kickoff Kit’s drive base kit. The voucher will be available on December 7th. Time to make this selection is running out! If you want the voucher, you must tell us by Noon Eastern Time tomorrow, Thursday, October 6th. Full information here. Veteran teams who don’t tell us they want the voucher by the deadline – along with all Rookie teams – will automatically get the drive base kit at Kickoff.

Frank

*I’m hoping for a resurgence of this term.

But where’s Hallry?

“L7!”
Dear God, I havent heard that since I was a kid and I’m old enough to be a grandfather.

When I see “L7” I think of the band.
But, different slang for different generations.

Channeling a little will.i.am I see.

May I ask what exactly an “L7” is?

I feel like it doesn’t carry the same weight as will.i.am.'s version. I think we all know what Frank meant though.

Slang for “square.” If I understand correctly, it used to refer to someone that was awkward or out of standard.

Found online, as my own attempts at description weren’t all that satisfying to me:

L7 was used in the 50’s/60’s to represent being “square” or old-fashioned or un-cool. (People would hold up their thumbs and forefingers to create a square shape as a non-verbal representation.)

“Marty, don’t be such a square”

I see. Another 1960s reference? And a reference to “square”? Interesting. Has there ever been an “L7” in a FIRST game manual?

Near KC, this is what I think of when I saw L-7 (ok, technically it’s R-7, but it’s LS R-7, so good enough)

Wikipedia has a disambiguation…Could any one of those be referenced? There is a satellite-another hint at a space theme?

Space blimps confirmed?

As far as I’m aware, nope. At least not in a rule.

Rules prefixes:
G: Game. Rules of play. What the ref is waving a flag about.
R: Robot. How you are supposed to build your robot. Why the inspectors won’t pass you.
S: Safety, no longer used. (Now the first section of G and R, using those prefixes.)
T: Tournament. Overarching rules of the tournament.

Is L7 an early incarnation of a smiley or emoticon construct? It doesn’t take too much imagination to join the lines together and get a square.

Be there or be square.
