It isn’t a direct answer to your question, but 2052 has been using BitBucket for a few years because they offer unlimited private repositories for free for educational groups. Setting it up took just a single email, and our entire domain was whitelisted, so anyone who registers with an @team2052.com address gets an educational account.
We actually have 20 repositories right now, so if we were to go with GitHub we would have to start paying when we create the repository for the 2016 robot.

In 2012 I was able to get free private repos by email them at [email protected]. The only hoop I had to jump through was they made us create a new organization account for our team.
