Hello everyone, I decided to combine my love of FRC and geography, so I’ve spent the last week or so making this spreadsheet and I wanted to share it with the community.
Events are organized by Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which is the US governments definition of the metro area of every city at the county level.
Couple of interesting findings I made:
Most small MSA’s that have events are in districts, and most of the larger MSA’s with no events aren’t in districts, I don’t know if this is correlation or causation, it’s probably a case by case thing
New York City is the only metro area with both regional and district events
Metro Areas with the most events:
9(!): Detroit (4.3m)
6: New York City (19.6m)
5: Boston (4.9m)
4: Philadelphia (6.2m), Seattle (4.0m)
3: Los Angeles (12.9m), Dallas (7.9m), Houston (7.3m)
Smallest Metro Areas With Multiple Events:
Niles, MI (150k)
Duluth, MN (280k) Both events in the same week strangely enough
Flint, MI (400k)
I apologize in advance for the formatting, I’m still learning how to do it, and for rambling or bad grammar, I hate writing. Anyway, thanks for checking out the spreadsheet and lmk if you have and questions or findings
I wouldn’t say it’s so strange, they’re literally in the same building (DECC Arena), so might as well do them at the same time.
But seriously, though I’ve never been, I’d love to make it up there one year, if I had to guess that’s the most teams you’ll ever see competing under one roof (109 this year) anywhere outside of the biggest DCMPs and CMP
Yeah I decided to just stick to the US, since different governments have different definitions and stuff like that. Might do an analysis of Ontario since there’s a decent number of teams and events
why do they do 2 events at once instead of on 2 separate weeks? Minnesota seems to have a problem of every event either being week 1 or 6, and this seems to compound the problem
Having events in two separate weeks means renting the Decc for two separate weeks. MN regionals are already outrageously expensive to run to begin with - and while yes, we do need more events in a variety of weeks, the answer to that is just more, less expensive regionals, in my opinion…although i digress as the longer i talk the higher the chance someone mentions districts and derails the thread
