I have been thinking about using sound as feedback for the drivers. I was not sure what the rules are surrounding having our laptop play some audio to the drivers. Where would I find information on this?
I’d start by reading the Operator Console rules in section 8.9 of the Game Manual.
Aside from R906 (which is a “don’t make an unsafe console” rule that doesn’t specifically cover sound), nothing in that section says you can’t.
With that said, there are two caveats I’d like to mention as design considerations.
First, it’s noisy down there at the field. You’re probably going to need to crank the audio a bit, hopefully not to unsafe levels.
Second, if you are thinking of using hearpieces/headsets, they’ll need to be wired to the operator console.
We used sound feedback for a few years. One tip is to not use a static tone, as that is easier to get lost in the background noise. Use something that changes over time (we cycled between two tones).
