Thank you to everyone who tuned in last night for FUN Recap and the return of the FRCTop25!
View the episode here. I’ll put a few time codes into the description so you can jump to the segment you want.
Just a couple notes. Israel events and teams will be eligible for week 2 voting. If you want to know where your team ended up and they are not on the top 40 please shoot me a pm or post here.
We also will bring back the expert and composite poll closer to champs. With so many events it is just too difficult to get a good mix of contributors for each week.
We had the same thing happen to us last year, teams we beat in playoffs got ranked ~20 spots higher.
They had expert rankings last year, those seemed to be a little less biased towards popularity. To be honest these rankings should be taken with a grain of salt. The real rankings are based off blue banners.
I agree. As it’s been discussed countless times before, this has always just been a popularity contest. Teams who have a preceding history will pop up in the minds of voters more often and get votes as a result. But for the few teams that do break into the list for the first time, it’s a good way to get people to start thinking about them and watch out for their future competitions.
The first part I agree with - these rankings are almost meaningless. However I don’t think blue banners are the be-all end-all way to rank teams either. There’s always a context that needs to be taken into account.
There was something last year about an FRC Power Rankings, I wonder if those will come back…
I don’t think blue banners and winning events are the best way to rank teams. Events are won by alliances, not by individual teams. Especially in a game like STEAMworks. Moreover, the elimination tournament is a small sample size event, where a pair of bad matches, fluke incidents, or weird match-ups can send an otherwise tremendous robot home without a banner. How many of you honestly believe that 2056 should have been ranked lower than 610 or 3560 after they lost to them in the Waterloo finals last year?
That being said, these might be the worst rankings in the history of FRC Top 25.
