[FTC]: Best motor for winch?

Hi,

I’m on a rookie FTC team. Our robot is using a drawer slide/basic grabber configuration for grabbing glyphs. Any recommendations for a good motor that could extend the stages of the drawer slide?

Also, would 1/16” galvanized cable work for the pulley system that would extend the slide?

We’re a rookie team. Tanx.

Any legal FTC motor will work fine as a winch if it is geared appropriately. The gearing is impacted by both the gearbox on the motor itself, any external changes (chain or sprockets) and the size of the drum the cable is wrapped around.

I am partial to the products that REV makes (because I work for REV) & because either the core hex or HD hex give you all sorts of mounting and interface options, but the offerings from AndyMark are also quite good.

On your questions about cable, galvanized steel for FTC is extremely overkill and it might not be flexible enough for your application. I recommend using a string like Spectra braided fishing line or a UHMWPE cord. You can get the fishing line on amazon or the cord here http://www.revrobotics.com/REV-41-1162/

We’ve always used aircraft cable, but it’s complete overkill. It’s nice to have it lying around in case we get another hanging game (we used it for our winch for climbing in Res-Q and only broke it once…)

Can’t go wrong with any of Greg’s advice though

Spectra, Dynema and UHMWPE are all good options cord wise. You should look at getting some V-groove bearings to run the cord around, it’ll help reduce friction and wear on your cord.
REV stocks these which are an affordable option.

In regards to the motors, I would stick with 550 based options such as the HD Hex and Neverest.
