We have a relatively new ShopSabre 23 with WinCNC in the Team 100 shop. Coming from Haas/Doosan/Deckel, I programmed a bore operation in Fusion CAM using Compensation in the Control. The posted code came up with G41 O0.1875, which at first glance I took to mean that the cutter would be offset from the programmed path by 0.1875, which was the cutter radius. No so. The cut ran with no offset - the tool centerline followed to path, and we ended up with a hole diameter larger than desired by the amount of the cutter diameter.
Can WinCNC handle Comp in the Control in the “normal” way? If so, what’s the trick? The WinCNC manual has the following, which don’t seem to explain the problem.
We have a ShopSabre PRO 404 that we got online just in time for the 2023 build season. The machine uses WinCNC, and there is no tool changer installed, so this should be quite similar to your machine in terms of control system. I tried to use in-control tool compensation for a tight-tolerance bearing flange press fit, and through conversation with technical support determined that even though the GUI has a tool compensation table, in order for it to have any effect you need the WinCNC license for the tool changer option.
We paid for the tool changer software option (~$200) and tech support configured WinCNC to do the right thing with tool numbers in the absence of an actual tool changer, which allowed me to specify non-zero tool numbers and use in-control compensation.
My fuzzy recollection is that I succeeded with the bearing flanges using in-control compensation, but I ran into what looked like a control bug for small-diameter bore holes (0.193" or 0.201", can’t remember). Such holes were routed with straight left/right sides well within the intended hole diameter. I was too busy during build season to follow up on this issue, and worked around it by disabling in-control compensation for the holes.
Thank you j.e., this is very helpful. We’ll have to noodle on this to see whether the cost is worth it, since the workaround for us is to simply always remember to “comp in the computer” on the ShopSabre. I am not a fan of comp in the computer on the Haas.
