Future Downtime

I received this e-mail from our host:
(yes, I knew about this before we changed hosts)

The company that hosts our website is moving from their current Verio hosted data center, to their own data center. This gives them more control of their network and it gives us better and faster support if anything goes wrong with the network.

We will begin the server moves at 6:00 p.m. EASTERN TIME on Saturday, January 19,
2002. (2300 GMT).

We will be doing final testing of systems, including testing the routing switch over
between January 15th and January 18th.

We anticipate the move will take anywhere from 5 to 10 hours. We will switch the
routing over halfway through the move. This will hopefully result in maximum down
time for any one server of approximately 5 hours.

Although we will not be changing or altering any data on the servers, nor do we
anticipate any problems, we do recommend that you do a local backup prior to the
moves.

We will have extra hardware on hand in the event we have any hardware failures.
Again, we don’t anticipate any problems, but having a backup plan is prudent.

I have complete faith in VenturesOnline and am sure they will have us up by early-morning Sunday, January 20th.

So, don’t panic when Saturday 19th comes around and the forums aren’t up.

You’ve been warned.

I think this is gonna drive some members of our community positively insane… people will be sitting at their computers pressing the refresh button until the forums come back up…

Normally, this would be me…however, Comcast went down AGAIN…had to restart my cable modem, and it’s getting junk packets from the DHCP server…

Seeing you’re in A2, I take it you’re having the same problems I am…and yes, that’s who I mean…any luck on your end today?

Nope, Not at all. Oh well.

Another email:

*Greetings,

Our plan for getting the data center ready for our servers continues to be on track.

We will perform a test of the switch over of the routing on Friday, January 18th at
7:00 PM Mountain Time. This is an important test that will verify the routing switch
over. During this test, your sites/servers will be unavailable for approximately 15
to 30 minutes.

VenturesOnline Tech Team.

FYI:

Greetings,

Earlier this evening, we performed our routing test. The test was a success. We did
identify a small issue with one of our IP ranges through one of our providers and
that issue is being resolved. Consequently customers on that block experienced a
longer down time than expected during this test.

At this point, with the successful completion of the routing test, everything is GO
for the data center move tomorrow.

So to recap: tonight there will be 5-10 hours of downtime…

Everything seems to be running fine from this end…

so does this mean all the downtime is over? the site seems a little bit quicker for me.

Yep.

everythings moved over.
possible speed increase for everyone, depending on where ya are.

no problems at all.

very pleased with the way VenturesOnline handled it.
i recommend them without a doubt to anybody looking for a good service provider. (tell em we sent ya, maybe we’ll get a referral credit or something…hehe)
