Highly agree. My first full-time engineering position out of college was with a company that sponsored the team I mentored during my final year in college, and I got the position because of my and their involvement with the team. Never know when stuff like that is gunna pop up.
In my senior year of HS, I got involved with a program called CareerWise that connects students with companies for real apprenticeships. Being a part of this program on top of FIRST was the best decision I have ever made. I was able to get a job at a good company doing quality and production automation while still in high school, and I am still working there while mentoring my old team and going to college for engineering. Students in Colorado or New York, I highly suggest you look into this.
