Gear shimming

Does anyone have tips for gear shimming? We are considering shimming our gears to reduce the backlash of our mechanism but we haven’t done it before and don’t really know how to.

Couple options

-Shim tape or shim stock from mcmaster
-loctite the gears to the shaft

Which loctite do you recomend? We currently have 242 and 262. I’ve also seen people refer to green loctite. It will be easier to get loctite than shim tape I believe.

You’d want to use a retaining compound (loctite).

Its best to degrease/primer and then use the compound. Most items here are good to use.

To expand on my comment, its probably best to loctite the gears to the shaft and then make sure to have spares. We (1323) will most likely use this method this year after seeing 971 have great success last year with it.

Thanks! I will look for one of those compounds locally. To see if I understood correctly, I’ll need to place the gear in the position I want it to stay and then loctite it to the shaft? Im guessing that is not coming off without heating it up.

don’t just “consider shimming”. do it. It will make your life so much easier. Put the shim tape on the inside face of the gear, securely hold the hex shaft in a vice or something, then pull the gear onto the shaft while holding the shim tape in place
