It’s my understanding that teams are expected to hang out in the pits at the GWCC between matches at the Dome, and that the 2 are separated by 1/4 to 1/3 mile. Based on the FVC schedule, I’m assuming that matches will be less than an hour apart, which means a lot of running back and forth. Since Vex robots are easy to transport, what makes sense to me is to climb into the spectator stands after a match, then descend onto the floor for the next competition round. Is this feasible? Is there any way to get from the top to the bottom?
In my past experience, no. They only open the stands for 1) Closing ceremonies when teams have to collect their awards and 2) for volunteers going onto the field (and even then you really have to try to get on there even with a shirt and a pass).
The only real way that teams can get onto the field is by going through the tunnel connecting the Dome and the GWCC.
From my past 3 years experience, M.O.R.T. is correct. The only other option that I am aware of is if you have your teams Media pass. You are then allowed to go down the stairs from the stands to the field and back of course. There is usually only one place in the dome that you are allowed to enter the field however and you have to ask around to find it. Also, each of the past 2 years, that entrance area has changed during the competition so you have to be on your toes. Dave
Vex has a shorter route, though–practically straight under the outer courtyard, I think. FRC goes around past the loading docks.
having been a team media member before, I can tell you that this is true for about 30% of the entrances to the field area from the stands. It really depends on the FIRST Volunteer or GWCC Staffer that is guarding the particular entrance you wish to use. Some people will let you by, and some won’t. I’m not sure what the actual policy is. I wonder who is in charge of granting that access… FIRST or the GWCC.
