Has anyone had experience with the Glacern Standard 6 inch vice for milling machines? We are purchasing 2 Kurts for our CNC mill but want a cheaper yet still good quality alternative for our manual mill. Other suggestions are welcome!
I have two Glacern 4". They are very nice. Also look at Shars if you’re on a budget. I really like the 4" Shars with the 6" opening and their 6" has good reviews.
My GMT R8 ER16 and ER25 toolholders and collets are great.
Couple posts on practical machinist suggesting that they’re sourcing the same vises as shars, not doing the final grinding/qa domestically as they used to suggest. A few people posted photos that made it look like they were just repainting the shars vise.
Other than that, lots of ugly business between them and an ex employee who went on to start orange vise.
The ones we had were good, but prices went up since then. Either go with the cheaper shars vise, or wait for a 25-30% coupon with free freight from enco and pick up a Kurt. Would recommend the latter.
The Orange Vices look interseting, hear good things about them would love to have one to play with. But for what what the team does it probably isn’t necessary (over 1grand for a vise ow). I did notice a orange vice logo on the 254 robot…
Otherwise a used Kurt off of Ebay/CG would be a solid deal. We have a few Shars vices and they are well within spec for manual work on a FRC robot.
