Great Northern Regional 2022

Figured I’d start up a discussion about the Great Northern Regional 2022! GNR had consistently been the most competitive event in Minnesota/North Dakota since its inception in 2018. This year looks to be no different!

This year we’ll have 50 teams at the event with 6 teams from North Dakota and 44 teams from Minnesota. 8887 is the only rookie attending the event this season.

For 15 teams this will be their second event of the season with all of those teams competing at either Northern Lights or Lake Superior. The event fields 2 Regional Winners from Northern Lights including 5172 and 5913. A Regional winner from Lake Superior (2531), and features two event finalists from Lake Superior (876 and 4607). 9/15 teams that competed in Duluth made the playoffs.

The event features numerous multi-ball autos including from 5913, 5172, 876, 4728, 4607, 3297, and 7028. I’d also expect a multi ball auto from 2883, 3630 and some others that haven’t competed yet!

8/15 teams that have competed so far have shown a Traversal Climb with another 6 showing a Mid Climb, and 1 showing a high Climb. I expect to see enough climbers at this event that the Climb ranking point is relatively commonplace.

The top cyclers going into the event based on pre-scouting data are:

  1. 5172
  2. 5913
  3. 4728
  4. 876
  5. 3297

I would also expect strong cycling performances from 2883, 3130, 3630, 4198, 4539, and 7028 based on robot history and what I’ve seen at various week 0 events. I’m sure there will also be some teams that surprise!

This game sorts the top robots really well. I’d expect your rankings to look pretty similar to the top cycler list above considering the Cargo RP will be regularly achievable for most of those teams, and all of them have a climber to facilitate the Climb RP.

Big Questions Going into the Event:

  • Has 5172 added a multi-ball Auto?
  • Has anybody improved significantly from Duluth?
  • Which of the 1st event teams is best prepared to make a splash?
  • Will there be enough Traverse Climbers for the top playoff alliances to draft one as their third robot?
  • Will we see enough consistent climbers and cyclers that the top overall seed averages >3.5 RP

I think there are enough good teams at this event that any of the top 3 seeds will have a chance to win. The top alliances will all be comprised of 2 Traversal/High Climbers that are also good cyclers. The third robot on each alliance will be a Defender with some sort of climber and Auto shot.

Uneducated Alliance Selection Prediction (for fun):

  1. 5172 - 5913 - 3277 (W)
  2. 876 - 4728 - 6453 (F)
  3. 3630 - 2883 - 3275 (SF)
  4. 3297 - 4607 - 4239 (SF)
  5. 3130 - 4539 - 6175
  6. 3134 - 7028 - 7048
  7. 3058 - 4480 - 8188
  8. 2531 - 4198 - 877

Correction, 49 teams. 4648 dropped the event this past weekend :frowning: That info is updated on frc-events and TBA, but probably wasn’t updated when you pulled your numbers.

Any idea on why they chose to layout the pits as they did? It confuses me.

I’m really looking forward to seeing 3130 and 4539. With this being their first event of the year, and them being high caliber teams, it will be interesting to see how things play out with them.

looking at 876, if their cycle speed has increased they will be a force to be reckoned with.
We have also made modifications to our robot :eyes:

Best of luck to you and 4607!

4539 needs to be talked about for sure. Hard to say how things will shake out here after a year and a half off. But they definitely embodied “fast and good” in previous years.

3130 always leaves me guessing a little tbh.

I recommend asking those on the RPC for the event, they are the ones who came up with the numbering layout for the pits.

Here’s an interesting visualization of scouting data from 1918’s scouting sheet.

wow, some impressive cyclers for sure. Hopefully our redesigned shooter can keep up. Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend

Excited to see 5172 again. Their bot has the shooting potential of 1690 if they can get everything tuned in just right. Not an easy task, but it’s fun to see an MN team pursue a world-class robot architecture.

Interested to see how the first event teams compete against the teams who are on their second. In the no-bag era, is the extra time in the shop more valuable than hitting the field in week 1?

Anyone know when/if the webcast will be up on today (Thursday)?

It’s up right now for practice matches.
