Great Plays of 2009

Yeah I heard about this, do you know if it was scored at Buckeye?

Little biased, but BAE Finals were awesome.

I think it was Buckeye finals #1 where 2 robots pinned another during autonomous in it’s starting position. The human player scored and got a 20 point lead going into teleoperated.

As far as individual moments go (not alliance), one of my favorite moments for us was when in our last qualification match, our robot pinned two enemy robots by itself. We wanted to pin the enemy alliance’s best scorer, but a rookie team’s robot got in between us and them. We proceeded to push the rookie team’s robot into the target robot and pin them both to the wall. We then held them both there for somewhere between 1/5 to 1/3 of the match while our human player filled up the target robot’s trailer. We knew we had a lot of pushing power, but just knowing we could do that was a amazing moment for us.

To be honest though, it really wasn’t that good a strategy. We could only fill up one of their trailers, and the rookie team’s robot didn’t have the ability to score so pinning it didn’t benefit us. Having two robots between us and the wall also put us in the middle of the field making us a good target for their human players. However, we still were excited when we pulled it off.

I my favorite play is quaters 3 match 2 at BAE when team 20’s ROBOT scored a super cell with a secound left (yes i know im biased). Our alliance partner had shot and missed and we just had time to pick it up and shoot before time expired.

Unfortunalty you dont see the shot but you see us pick it up and then it being in the trailer.

I saw the field manager take a cell phone pic of that moon rock on the trailer before taking it down. that was cool!

Actually, on Thursday, we (1732) were able to slow down 1114 pretty well. Instead of scoring on ‘robotless trailors’, our aggressive driver decided to try to score on 1114 and in the process held them to one dump in the two practices matches. While it was only practice, it gave us hope that we could slow them down in the quarterfinals. 1675 was the first to pin them in ‘real matches’ (if I recall correctly) and probably did a better job than we did.

Anway, thanks for the praise, I’ll be sure to pass it along to our drivers. We are just lucky it was a best of 3 (I doubt we could beat them again) and got to 1114 early in the season. Knowing 1114’s dedication, I’m sure they are doing everything to get better; there is no way I would want to play them again this season.

Semi finals and the Finals at San Diego. Check out the defensive play of team 2543. They had the entire arena on their feet as they held 968 pinned to the wall and prevented them from being able to dump. 968 dominated the whole regional… that is until the met 2543. It was awesome

I think the common term a bunch of us used was “968 got 1114’d at San Diego”

It was sick strategy. No offense to them, but 968’s partners (IMHO) were not helping out RAWC as much as they should’ve. Don’t get me wrong, they were darn good robots.

There really isn’t much that can be done when wide robots pin long ones. It was a tactic that really gained popularity at this regional.

Wide robots would use the bumpers to their advantage and pin robots between the kingpin and the trailer. Teams were able to “pin” robots without using the walls, even in the middle of the field. This strategy was demonstrated perfectly by 2543 during the Finals when they pushed the Holy Cow’s halfway across the field, sideways, into the drivers station wall. 2543 had quite a machine, as they were able to maintain this pin on more than one team over the course of the regional, for extended periods.

We gave it our best effort to free our Alliance partner, but despite our best efforts, there really was nothing we could do to free 968.

In my opinion, 2543’s choice early on to use their robot’s low center of gravity and power ramping system to pin other robots, was a brilliant tactical decision. My hat is off to you guys.

In the first quarterfinal at FLR, what has to be the most epic stragity of a 8th seed against one of the best robots of the 1st seed. Red Alliance’s 188 goes off to take over an idle robot and goal by one of the Blue Alliance’s human player stations. 188 goes over to drop off 4-5 moon rocks, and all of the sudden the other two blue alliance robots attack 188 from behind, pinning them in and scoring from both robots plus the human player…this happened really late in the match before the other red alliance teams could come back. The match went to the 8th seed.

Had to be the best stradegy of FLR. I can’t wait to see if we have video of it.

As much as I hate to say it… the best co-ordinated stratagy I saw was during our semi-finals match in Boston.

61 and 1099 had our robot pinned to the far wall while 190 just kept on making dumping runs into our open trailer. I think our teammates were also tied up on the wall, so they couldn’t do anything.

I have to say, it’s a nice feeling when all the robots want to stop your robot because it’s so good. Haha.

If there is video, this will probably be the best match from the first two weeks to study. It will be of interest for teams with all ranges of robot abilities showing examples of both what to do, and what not to do.

Most every team wants to go out there and show what they’ve got. Sweep balls, then once you reach a reasonable capacity find the closest stationary target to unload into. Not a bad strategy most of the time, and we spent the entire qualification round doing this, with a fair amount of success.

This match will demonstrate just how dangerous it is to do this with little regard for field position, time left, position of other opponents on the field, and super cell distribution.

As part of rookie team 3015, I was really proud to be part of that match and contribute to that win. We were really stacked against it going against that unbelievable alliance with two rookies teams. We knew we couldn’t win with pure scoring, we had to think of something and targeting 188 was our best option. I remember us being down by about 14 with ~15 seconds left and thinking we were done, then I saw 188 pinned in a corner with our human shooter going crazy, sinking shot after shot and our robot scoring and watching our numbers go up. We by about 4 points, it was insane. Even though we lost the next two matches, that one match made my day. Were not going to Atlanta but this was one event I’ll remember forever.

1622 Spyder was doing their best to push 2543 off of 968, but then the two best offense components of the alliance are basically out of the competition because of the one pinning robot.

At Traverse CIty finals, someone threw a moonrock [who hadnt had a good time throwing that match] and tied the game!!!

Kettering had an incredible squeeze play by 65 and 2771… 65 uses their auton to drive over to the payload specialist and fill up their hopper, so they had a completely full bot as well as 2771 with their initial rocks. The two of them jumped on 33 the instant teleop started, pinning their trailer between the two of them.

At first it was ust an impressive pin in the middle of the field that completely locked down 33, until you realize you have two very full, very efficient dumpers in perfect position. The poor Bees had a completely full trailer within the first 10 seconds of teleop.

I really hope that the matches get up on TBA, it’s a play that every driver/strategist needs to see. Ken maintains it was luck… I disagree

In our last match today we were playing with 1515 and 1644 against 4, 973, and 1323. We gave an empty cell to 1515’s HP at the beginning of the match. With 20 seconds left there was nobody nearby to score on. With about 15 seconds left team 4 gets close enough and 1515 and ourselves pinned them between us and 1515’s HP shot the supercell, but missed with 10 seconds left. It lands a little bit in front of our robot so we go to pick it up and we get it with about 7 seconds left on the clock. We turn to aim at team 4’s trailer and shoot it in from 3-4 feet away with 2 seconds on the clock.:ahh:
That was definitely the most exciting match so far.

You saw the L.A. buzzer shot one right? Blue “home” fueling station to red trailer, half-court or so and right in the middle, at the buzzer. I don’t remember if it changed the match or not, but I will go on record as saying that I saw at least one ref cheering the shot. Plus half the arena. It was sometime after lunch, maybe mid-afternoon. I don’t remember the teams involved.

I missed that one, but I remember Team 40 making a couple half court shots in Manchester.
