What do you guys think the greatest/most intense/most exciting/most amazing moment in the actual FIRST competition rounds were/was? If ya got video footage of it, then post it!
Well, for me, it was 4 years ago. It was during the GLR, and our team was out. We where going for the bar, and grabbed, but everyone thought we broke. The announcer, our partners, and our opposing alliances. “They broke! They Broke!” I can still rember that. Well, we defended the ramp, and 30 seconds later, we where hanging! Everyone’s jaw dropped. We had used some string to haul us up, but allow us to defend the ramp. Good times… :yikes:
MOE vs. 3.0
BEAUTIFUL. Two three goal grabbers smashed toghther.
MOE and 3.0 are totaly stationary. The goals are in the middle and the two other alliance partners are running around. MOE’s PARTNER GETS STUCK! Yes, their partner gets stuck on their wings. 15 secs to go. MOE launches their tether and makes it. 3.0 launches their thether and makes it. 3.0 Alliance partner makes it in the end zone. 10 vs 20. BUT MOE is DQ’ed and 3.0 wins with 60 QP.
I know the last time this was brought up, people kinda got ticked off, but I just think this was a great match of the 2002 season.
BattleCry 3 Final Match
Our team is with 190, WPI, a wikked strong 2 goal grabber. we start the match with the usual, going up the side of the field, maybe gettting about 17 balls. Meanwhile, Rage 173 the National champs are doing the same thing, and maneuvering for a goal. we have already dumped. We have two goals in our zone, and we want the third. Our coach says to our driver to go get the goal. Rage has a load of balls as we go to do this, and are maneuvering their arm upwards for a dump. we come speeding for that goal. We accidently hit 173’s arm, and tip them over. One thing about their dumper was that everytime they do dump, the arm changes their whole centre of gravity. The crowds feaking out, each team is freaking out. Our driver is hysterical thinking we might be DQ’d. Well, there is nothing we can really do about that, mind as well finish the match. Our driver then goes and pushes Rage into our home zone. Mean while 173’s partner is trying to mess with the goals, its too late, we drive back to the home zone, 190 deploys their tether. What a match. It also was my first time operating, I was psyched. We win 89 to 0.

I remember team 66’s (the team I was working with that year) machine had a similar design…I unfortunately wasn’t there during practice at GLR, but I heard that the arena suddenly got very quiet as our claw disconnected from the deployment arm, and then we winched ourselves up the ramp and put us into scoring position…
Two years Ago. 4 team alliance. 4 scoring robots, 2 goals on the balanced ramp. Big balls on top. Time left on the clock!
National scoring record!
What Chris is talking about is the very FIRST 710 match at the 2001 Midwest regional with the alliance of 234, 71, 111, and 269. This was defently an exciting match to watch and be a part of it. I still cringe every time I watch it because I was SO close to spoiling the match by tipping the goal over. You can watch the match here: http://www.wildstang.org/2001/video/wsvideo.htm
Personally, my best FIRST moment was during the 2000 SPBLI Long Island Regional. We won the local regional as a rookie team!!
We were the alternate bot in the three team alliance and one of our partners was damaged beyond repair. So we got to go in and play for the best of three final.
We won the first heat. We also won the second by having our bot 1/2" off the carpet and on the ramp, giving us the necessary points to take “all the marbles.”
To date, that was my favorite game. All four robots gnashing to the ramp and reaching for the bar in the last 15 seconds of the competition was AWESOME! (This also happened before BattleBots was even on the air.)

Go POBots!!! Team 353.
I agree with David on that one. The first 710 match was definitely awesome. As for the funniest match I’ve ever seen, it was this match. I think even had I been on one of the other teams I would’ve thought this was funny. Although the funniest part is the way John described it in that post…“a pet-hotbot.”

2000 UTC New England Regional Championship final round. 131 and 237’s opposing alliance had 2 or 3 more points than they did in their trough. The rounds were tied 1-1 I believe. With ten seconds to go 131 starts digging for one of the opposing alliances 5 point black balls. Three of four seconds to go in the final match they steal the 5 point black ball and win the regional. The crowd went chaotic. Then it was time for National’s…
2001 MidAtlantic Regionals, last round.
The final two alliences were perfectly matched. This went on for ever! Every time a score was posted the next round beat it. It just kept going back and forth getting higher and higher.
It ended with a nearly perfect tie, decided by the last tie breaker in the book. The refs acutally had to check the rule book, and for 5 minutes the entire crowd was either holding thier breath, or going nuts. It was incredible.
There couldn’t be a harder fought final.

I believe it was actually broken with the first or second tie breaker (average score in the elimination round) not the last one. Still very impressive finish.
Matt
I can’t remember too much detail about this match but it was at Rumble at the Rock (when it was still outside). It was down to the final matches when one of the teams fell down and broke. They took their five minute time out to fix the robot and still didn’t have time. Then Mike Bastoni asked the audience if we should let them have more time and we all cheered yes. Granted they came back into the game with only a driveline but it was very exciting seeing a team become destroyed and then come back with the permision of the audience to play again. This really shows the spirit of first.
Two matches I really remember:
1999 - Chicago - The Chief dancing with another robot with the Puck. Seriously looked like they were doing a tango or something…
2001 - Nationals - Semi-Final Round, Team Hammond squeaks out a win against team 217- Royal Fusion, because 217 missed the time multiplier by 3 SECONDS!!!
2000 Motorola Midwest Regional
In the Elims Round, the 45, 47, 111 allience was losing late in the match, until Our driver went on one side of the opposing allience goal, while the chief was on the other side attempting to get balls out of the other goal. Our driver gave a little push to the 5 point black ball and the Chief sucked out that black ball. Our allience won that match by 1 point and we moved on and then won the regional.
Personaly my greatest first moment was when we were in Philly last year and won the final round by 1 point. It was just so excited because it was our first, first place win ever at a regional.
Skitzosmurf already said one of my favorite moments.
Another one from last year was in the Archimedes division during qualifying. Ricksta121, our strategy guy, went around telling everyone on the team that he had figured out a way to score 180qp pts in the next match. He explained how we would go about doing it and we didnt think it was possible. We knew we had to score at least 60pts for our alliance and then go and help them. So we did this and we scored 66pts for oursel and we then gave our opponents points by going into their endzone. At the end of the match we were short because even though we gave our opponent points it didnt add up to the 60 they needed. Then all of a sudden the announcer came on saying that this was the highest score ever. He then went to explain that our opponents tether went under a goal. No one on our alliance had even noticed. The score…198pts for us. Ricksta121 was right.
And to think… we gave them points during the match.

This was an exciting one. Listen to the video and you will hear a collective inrush of breath as the crowd realized what had occurred.
My personal favorite dates back to when it was legal to call a timeout before a match started if you couldn’t get your robot working. Under “gracious professionalism” at it’s greatest hour, one team after another called their official time out in sequence to allow all four teams to help fix a broken robot and get it on to the field to play. I feel if you came to play, I’m going to help you make it so.
Thanks Dave and Chris for the reminder!
I definetly think that the 2000 game had some great moments, the last few seconds of that match…4 robots reaching for that bar on that little ramp…WHEW…my favorite thing was at Mayhem in Miami we had a kind of the hill match. 6 robots fighting for the top of the ramp…what was intense, i think 3 of the robots broke thier lens covers in that one. Also in that year the finals were great, seeing that HUUUGE arm just taking balls as they pleased
My favorite would have to be River Rage 2001 It was the finals With 151, 190, and 121 in one alliance agaist another really good alliance( soory I was never good with numbers) Any ways the high score kept going back and forth, higher and higher still, back and forth, finally after about 3 or four matches, 151 had two goal on the bridge and just enough balls to win in one goal, but there was this one black ball right on the top of the goal, if that ball had fallen we would have lost :ahh: It was very exciting
