Hello everyone, Lately I’ve been thinking about some ways to improve your standard, boring, old FRC gearbox.
I wanted to make it Compact, Light Weight and Cheap. After years upon years of research and development i introduce to you… this thing…
Gear Ratio Reduction
21.43:1
(7t Gear to 150t Gear)
Purchase your gears here (Needs to be re-bored than hex broached)
Pros
- Weight - By removing the unnecessary gears i reduced weight
- Complexity - By removing the unnecessary gears i reduced the overall complexity
- Cost - By removing the unnecessary gears i reduced the cost
- Space - By removing the unnecessary gears i saved some space
Cons

I… I mean… this? I have never seen anything so beautiful. Don’t publish CAD for this or big FRC companies might try to steal your design.

I can’t believe you’ve done this

Why did the old designs have so many gears?

Ignoring the fact that this a terrible idea, will definitely fail, and nobody should make it… why even kick over the Falcons here? a more traditional motor > plate > gears > plate > siderail setup fits… and should end up a bit lighter (and definitely better supported for the shafts).

It’s the only motor we ever need now. Duh.

I don’t know what you are talking about, this is clearly the unaltered future of FRC drivetrain gearboxes.

Not only Drivetrains but also elevators, arms or any other mechanisms!
“Tradition is just peer pressure from alumni”
Joking aside i just wanted to make it as visible as possible

I see your plan and raise you another:
Turn down the output shafts of the falcons to 0.1", and put them in contact with the wheel. Add a tensioning (compressing?) system if you really need it.
Pros
- Weight - By removing the all the gears i reduced weight
- Complexity - By removing the all the gears i reduced the overall complexity
- Cost - By removing the all the gears i reduced the cost
- Space - By removing the all the gears i saved some space
Cons
- You don’t get to use the Falcon 500 Powered by TalonFX Spline Powered by VexPro

A direct improvement on a modern classic.

Serious question. Is this thing meant to be a joke or an actual gearbox with promise?
