hall of fame

I like the idea that first will have a hall of fame but i would like to see more than just the chairmans award winners in it. If first did put other people in the hall of fame besides chairmans awards winners who would you like to see in it.

FIRST likes the idea that “everyone is a winner”.
If they do a hall of fame for competition winners, for example, they would be showing that being a champion is the best thing you can get in a FIRST competition, but it’s not.
Certainly there are teams that have never won any awards but have reached the goal of the competition very well.

i think that all award winners should be eligable to get in a hall of fame, and i also would like to see a yearly poll to see who everyone thinks should be in the hall of fame (regardless of winning awars or not). this would show who the participents felt deserved to get in as well as the judges.

I think thats a good idea…if they want to have a Hall of fame…maybe teams should vote on who should be in it…of course award winners, but other teams that did just as well but didn’t win anything…

A FIRST Hall of Fame, I think, should focus on the success stories of the FIRST mission, not on the teams.

How about highlighting individual participants who have gone on to pursue science and engineering careers and such? Particularly, those who might otherwise not have been inclined to do so, were it not for FIRST.

Mize well have at least one dissenting opinion on here.

I think FIRST is all about the teams in the competition and not just those who come away with trophies and medals. That said, there has to be a way to recognize those teams who have gone so far above and beyond the call of duty. That’s what the Chairman’s Award is for.

The Chairman’s Award is the greatest honor any team can possibly recieve. Keeping it’s Hall of Fame closed to all but the best ensures that the prestige of those honored in it is maintained forever.

I doubt the FIRST Hall of Fame will be any sort of physical edifice, ala Cooperstown for baseball. (Though if it is or will be someday, I would definitely advocate honoring in it other teams in some other fashion.)

If one team is incredible… they should be in the hall of fame… or have their own “wing.” One should be the chairmans winners… and another for incredible teams…? shrug

agreed…if u induct single teams because of their robot its too subjective

Maybe it’s just me, but it gets really super annoying hearing “You are all winners”. It bothered me when i was in preschool and the teachers would say it, and it bothers me now when dean kamen says it. Chairman’s award is special because it is so selective. These teams have done something that deserves recognition, and to classify them with teams who simply have an outstanding robot cheapens their recognition. That’s my opinion.
Now, for all you believers in “everyone’s a winner”, think of a Chairman’s Hall of Fame as remembering the teams who truly understand the concept of “everyone’s a winner”.

I would like to see Founder’s Award and Woodie Flowers award winners in the Hall of Fame. A Hall of Fame should be for people or organizations that are more than just a robot. The Chairman’s award is much more than A robot or even A presentation. It is about a year of “good things” that are well documented. The Founder’s and Woodie Flowers awards are similar in that they represent continued achievement that is more than just during the robot building and competition season.

Why does anyone have to be a winner?

In my opinion, I think too much emphasis is placed on awards and seeding and everything else.

On one hand, I definitely see the need for competition, as it’s some innate human characteristic. But, on the other hand, competition isn’t the ultimate goal that we’re after through all of this.

A Hall of Fame, fundamentally, stratifies a community into subclasses that probably ought not exist. In FIRST, there already exist certain classes that are a fact of life. If it’s possible, I’d seek to avoid the further diversification of FIRST teams and participants. It all seems to fly in the face of what FIRST is really about.

The HOF should be for more than chairman award winners…i mean come on you can’t forget about the teams that have come and gone and taken a few national championships with them

FIRST HOF should be more than Chairmans award…

I notice with mild amusement that your sig file lists your team’s ranking in various meets. Seems to contradict your post.

In some ways, perhaps. I’ve changed it, anyway.

Really, I saw it as a celebration of achievements as a rookie team. Moreso, especially, than as a way of separating ourselves from other teams.

At any rate, I’m beginning to feel quite strongly about this, as at regionals, our team placed too much emphasis on performance - and it hurt morale in many ways.

Personally I believe the HOF should be only for Chairman’s Award winners.

When we lost the Semi-finals at LI and UTC, most of my team was all frowns, I however was as chipper as ever because the team itself was great, we were cheering, we were congradtuatlting, we were a team. Even when we lost the Finals in the Newton division, still some team members were all frowns. It was the best the team had ever done ranking, performance, and working AS A TEAM.

This competition has always been about teamwork and heart, and I think if there is going to be any sort of “elite” recognition, from year to year, it should definetly be the Chairman’s award, for any other of the “robot” awards, are not about what FIRST is about, (not making this an anti-BB post) in BB you get “the Golden Nut” and some cash, in FIRST you get the experience. The only money given out in FIRST is scholarships, to show that the experience you get from being the best as a team, is the TEAM you get out of it!

It has taken me three years to realize the true meaning of the competition, but I have. My team never got the concept of the Chairman’s award, it was always said “Document the team’s progress” while what was really meant was the progress of the TEAM on the COMMUNITY, not on the robot.

Starting today we are re-arranging our efforts to spread the word of FIRST and start new teams, branch to our lower schools, and surrounding communities. Our ultimate goal is to make Long Island the place to find qualified engineers, and the winners of not only the Championship, but the Woodie Flower’s award, the founders award and the Chairman’s award, every year.

We are raising the bar, so everyone else can try to as well.

I LOVE FIRST!

To get Chairmans it takes a lot of heard work and sweat to get it. I personally think (this post in my view on things) that this is FIRST’s way of saying congrats to the teams that finally found that formula. I am glad they did it. Now all the teams will be rembered for ever.
