Has Covid-Delta killed the 2022 season?

I was at Calgames for a few hours over the weekend, held in San Jose with a number of covid rules:

  • Vaccination proof required
  • Masking indoors
  • Team and total event capacity limits
  • All attendees have to check in for contact tracking

Santa Clara county 's current case rate is low (8.9 per 100k residents) and vaccination rate is 88.7% of 12+ residents with 1 dose.

Mask compliance rate appeared to be 100%, and there appeared to be no issues with checking vaccination status (card of pic of card). These are by now standard rules in this area, so it will probably vary by region.

Suggestions I have going forward:

  • Event organizers
    • Please, please, please turn down the music. It’s harder to hear people through masks and then they have to sit even closer and yell
    • Keeping field/pits as cool as possible makes wearing masks a lot more comfortable and reduces fogging
    • Have participants submit names and vaccine records ahead of time, and just use IDs for entry. Checking everyone’s card takes quite a while
    • Social distancing is not going to work as a mitigation measure, and should not replace mask wearing, vaccine requirements, or capacity limits if those are deemed necessary
  • Teams:
    • Have your members wear surgical masks or KF94 (Korean style KN94) if possible. It’s easier to talk through, seals at the nose which prevents fogging, and is more comfortable if you get sweaty
