I would encourage people to not get bogged down to much by the rulebook, it’s really long and your time is probably better spent working on your designs. It’s hard to be creative when you’re having to think about so many rules. When you bring your robot to the competition they have inspectors there to tell you if anything is illegal so you can find out and fix it then.

If you don’t have time to do it right, how will you have time to fix your mistakes?

I guess you won’t have tome to fix your spelling…

I disagree, as both an inspector and mentor, knowing the rules can be key in developing important strategies.

As an RI (and alumni, and mentor), it is painful to watch a team have to completely remove or reconfigure their robot on practice day because they failed to read the rules. Last year I had to tell a team their robot was 153 lbs and they had to remove their cube mechanism to get under weight, nobody wants to have that happen. In addition, for Steamworks I saw a team have to cut 6" of their robot off to fit inside the frame perimeter at a week 0 event, which is not fun either.

As a student & mentor, knowing the rules is extremely helpful for designing the robot. Take for example last year where teams had to try and put the cube on the scale. Knowing the maximum dimensions of the robot is extremely helpful when trying to figure out if some design concepts are even feasible.

Now, I do agree that there is a lot in the rulebook that doesn’t need to be read, but I still suggest that everyone have atleast one person per section of the rules assigned to read and know it almost by heart, and for some sections/rules having everyone know them.

Of course not (yet) lol. But I (and those who also answered “lol no”) should soon.

Yeah but that sounds like a great learning experience,.,.,

I thought you were supposed to not read the rules and bombard the Q&A with questions about rules after watching kickoff video once

No that’s what CD is for silly

I suspected as much, but wanted to make sure that any new FRC team member reading the thread didn’t get the wrong idea.

Wait, there’s a rule book?

Can’t be wrong if you don’t read the rules.:thinking::thinking::thinking::thinking::thinking:

I haven’t read the rule book yet. Haven’t watched the animation either. I’ll get to it eventually

I still haven’t decided how much I want to be part of this season. I might just buy my team dinner one night, and poke my head in occasionally. Been very busy at work recently. My team’s after school hours again are making mentoring difficult for me. :frowning:

Around here we call that “delegation”. I smell management in your future!
