History of districts

Hey there! I’m doing a project for my high school stats class using frc data. Does anyone happen to know when the district model was instituted in certain regions?

This pretty sick video covers the creation of districts and when they were implemented in different regions.

Off the top of my head:

2009 - FIM (Michigan)
2012 - MAR/FMA (Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware)
2014 - PNW (Alaska, Oregon, Washington), NE (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island)
2015 - FIN (Indiana)
2016 - CHS (Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia), PCH (Georgia), FNC (North Carolina)
2017- ONT (Ontario), ISR (Israel)
2019 - FIT (Texas, New Mexico)
2023 - South Carolina Joins PCH

This is what a cursory search of CD had returned

WOW, I sure do wonder why it’s only Eastern Pennsylvania.

Based on the event signups of the one team in Alaska, PNW originally did not include Alaska but it was added to the district in 2016, and apparently they exited PNW beginning now in 2024

Here’s a current map of districts if you haven’t already seen it :slightly_smiling_face:

I don’t know if this will effect your data, data, but SC was added to PCH in the 23 season. before that SC was regional.

Interesting!

I wonder why they exited PNW , travel costs perhaps?

Though because they’ve always been the only team in Alaska for their entire life (6621 be damned ), I guess they were always more like the exception to district rules, similar to 1102 (PCH 2018-2021 before officially joining in 2023) and 7329 (Afghan team that competed in ONT during 2018).

As I understand it from those who were there:

  1. 1102 did move its workspace to Georgia during that time
  2. 1102 had students from Georgia on the team
  3. Those two points factored heavily on the decision about whether to change their city of record to Augusta, GA (and thus, going from regionals to Peachtree) when it crossed then-director Frank Merrick’s desk.

This wasn’t some special exception or “we opened a PO Box” deal. 1102 was genuinely working in both states.

2018: California is three years away from districts
2021: California is three years away from districts
2024: California is three years away from districts

California will get districts the year that your freshmen graduate. Too bad freshmen never* graduate as such…

When every event they travel to is going to be on a flight it’s much more worth it to try to qualify to worlds from a single regional than have extra steps such as qualifying to district champs and then worlds.

Also just after Covid 1102 moved its build space out of Ga, It was out of PCH for one year when it came back and brought the whole state of SC

I kinda wish NC and SC combined to make a Carolina district, instead of PCH and SC

I’m honestly glad they did not combine.

Reminiscent of the story first heard from my Cub Scout den mother in the early 1960s, who had been told it as a college student in the 1950s. We will have clean electricity from nuclear fusion in about twenty years.
