Do most teams (esp finalists) have both a hatch and ball shooter? Or just specialized in one?
Specialists seem to do very well at week 1 events. My team only does hatch so we’ll see at week 3.
I have seen very few teams who are actually shooting cargo due to the small scoring locations.
We are… back to 2016
Things will progress as the year moves on and teams get more used to using their robots and playing the game. These first few weeks of most years, specialists are able to do very well especially if they have significant practice. That’ll change as robots who can do it all dial things in
I hope no one has a hatch shooter, which is not legal within the rules.
Our team is specializing in hatches, but that decision was driven by time constraints, not strategy.
We were, for a time, under the impression that we were going to be captaining the #2 alliance at a small week 1 event. When looking at potential alliance partners, we were looking at a ton of capable cargo cyclers, with almost no capable hatch robots. Hatches are harder to do well, and robots that can handle them well are rare. We would have jumped on a hatch specialist if one had been there.
We do both but only the height of the cargo ship and bottom rocket hatches. I have a feeling we’ll be focusing on one game piece or the other during a match but it will depend on factors during the match.
It is not very important to have both a hatch and ball shooter on the robot because the field has not been filled up yet ,however if there was a team on your alliance that could fill either all the balls or all the cargo then it would be important to do both.
Having both is good so you dont have to play on the same side of the field as your alliance partners.
This seems like the kind of question you should have asked eight weeks ago. Just saying.
Our team does neither. We are strongly dedicated to playing defense and have actually received comments from judges saying that they expect to see us in the playoffs, if not finals. (Not bragging, this was actually very surprising to us lol)
High-level teams will have a manipulator for both objects as you can very quickly run out of scoring opportunity if you specialize in cargo for example. With that in mind, for qualifications, if you prepopulate the cargo ship with null hatches, I think cargo-specialized bots will do better than hatch-specialized bots. In elims though, at our first event, hatch-specialized bots were rarer and became more important.
