We have a 3 CIM ball shifter with a third stage and mag encoder housing. I was wondering how to calculate the ticks per inch. Is the encoder connected to the output shaft so we don’t with the shifting element?
If your mag encoder is attached to the output shaft (the same shaft as one of the wheels, most likely), then you don’t have any additional work to do other than entering the wheel diameter. If it’s earlier in the drive train, it depends on the specific gearbox you’re using.
With vex ball shifters, I am fairly sure they are on the output of the second stage. They are definitely after the shifter and before the 3rd stage which is external to the gear box.

We have this
The encoder isn’t on the output shaft, but is effectively after the shifting mechanism, so you won’t have to deal with ticks per inch changing when you shift.
