So we are working on putting together our robot, but I wanted to know what you all think a good gear ratio to use for an intake is. We want to be able to intake while driving a KOP chassis at full speed, but we need to know what gear ratio is a good idea. We have the options from versplanetaries and the andymark Banebots 4:1 from the 2019 KOP. What ratio do you recommend?
Thanks!
To decide on an intake ratio, we would need to know the size of the rollers / wheels and the motor you plan on using. Generally you gear 2x max floor speed or faster.
How fast is your drive train (FPS) in theory? We typically double the speed of the drivetrain for the intake. So for example if your drivetrain is geared for 12fps then your intake should be geared for 24 fps.
The JVN Calculator might be able to help determine your intake reduction. Use the single speed drivetrain tab. Input your intake motor, your intake wheel size, and a total robot weight of 5lbs and you can then play with the ratios to find something that is twice as fast as your drivetrain.
