How to setup the Victor Fans

I’m just wondering where do red and blue wires connect to the digital side cart.

It is actually a little simpler than that! All you have to do is put the red fan wire on the same screw as the red input wire (the one that goes into the Power Distribution Board) and the blue fan wire on the same screw as the black input wire. Hope this helps!

The most common way to wire the Victor fan connections is to wire them directly to the V+ and V- input terminals of the Victor. This way, whenever the Victor has power, the fan will be on.

Valencia,
I recommend you wire the fans directly to the power input on the Victor. If you check the KOP page on the First website there are links to the installation and operations documents for the Victor speed controllers.

Last year when we used the victor speed controls we did not use the fans. But we where only using it to control a small motor. I do not recommend doing this if you are using larger motors like the drive motors or the bigger bane bot motors.

I’m curious as to why you would do this?

I can’t think of any situation where it would be a good idea, the fans use a negligible amount of power, and power FETs can actually heat up quite rapidly if your motor stalls, even momentarily by accident.

Actually, I’ve never looked in the rules regarding this particular configuration, is there anything in the rules forbidding a fanless speed controller, or is it just not a good idea?

Surprisingly, this was the only thing I was able to find in reference to the fans was this clause:

D. The supplied fans attached to speed controllers may be powered from the power input
terminals.

It doesn’t seem that there is anything in the manual that mandates the use of the fans on the speed controllers - not that I would recommend not using them.

Using Victors without the fans is popular among combat robotics.

The manufacturer says the fans need to be in place and First supports the manufacturer on this point. Victors must have fans.

From the 884 User’s Manual…

  1. The fan must be wired so it is always ON when the
    Victor is ON.

If you did not have fans on your Victors in the past, consider yourself lucky.
