This is a guide that explains the basic flow of the FIRST “Rapid React” Robotics Game to a VIP, family member or visitor who is new to the game. It suggests what to watch on the field and tells why robots are doing what they are doing. Scoring is explained with examples and predictions.
Please feel free to copy this, print it, forward it, or whatever you wish to do to help our team members and visitors better enjoy their experience at the Houston Champs.

My rundown for the uninitiated started pre-match:
-
Point out rankings of robots on display and have them know team number of highest ranked robot. If you know a better robot is playing tell them about that one. Or if your robot is playing tell them your number.
-
Point out above robot on field and tell them that is a robot to watch that match. If they can see, point out the team number on the robot bumpers.
-
Explain that they have 15 seconds programmed to start and will try to score in the hub.
-
Point out the real-time scoring. Especially finishing autonomous it give a feeling for which alliance may win. I focused only on the total score and the n/20 value. You can explain quintet here, if they get one.
-
Keep attention to above robot. Mention how the cargo score is progressing, if they’ve crossed the value.
-
Hangar points are pretty easy to state and it is an exciting part for new spectators.
-
Alliance selection and that the match is qualification match can be explained. You can point out which alliance won and the new rank.
Anyhow, I don’t know how easily to write this all. It would be great to get it all also into a single-page summary. It helped to have someone point out in things during a match, and I did that for a few new parent spectators this year.
