I Hereby, unofficially declare Thursday, April 25 FIRST Artist Day!

Yes, that’s right folks. Thursday, being practice day, will be more of an info/strategy gathering day. A day to relax. And well, a day, IMHO, the artists of the teams can gather. So all animators, painters, poets, musicians, performer, and not-so-engineery kooky types, thursday is your day to shine! And if we get enough people, perhaps we can continue it over the entire 3 days. So here’s the rundown:

1-2:30: FIRST poetry readings
Got a poem about robots, science, or technology? How about a song you wrote to spoof the FIRST competition? Or maybe you’re just a regular poet who’s involved with FIRST and may not exactly be working on the robot. Come on down and share your work with the rest of the group!

2:30-4:30: Arteest time
Got a neat artistic idea you wanna express to the FIRSTers at Nats? Bring your sketch books, paper, pens, pencils, paints, or whatever artistic medium you have. I’m going to do my best to have at least primary paint colors there and a biiig roll of paper, Plus sidewalk chalk if we can get any parking space to ourselves. Glee! The gathering of the artistic side of FIRST to meld our minds in media mingling!

4:30-5(or whenever;): Drum circle
From the work I did with 168 I kept hearing they wanted to start a drum circle. So let’s infuse as one with the beat of our drums in the very beginning! Or any ol’ instrument you got, and add to the collective as we find places to put up the artwork our messy paint-covered selves have produced earlier. And this can go on longer than 5 but I need to get over to the…

5-6: Animation meeting
I had originally planned for the animation meeting to be from 2-3, but why not make it later so when we’re done we can all head over as a group to the animation presentation from 6-7 at the Einstein stage? Oh, and someone’s gonna get some kind of award for helping out the FIRSTanimators in the message boards. I can’t guarantee who it’s gonna be or what the award is yet, but it’s going to be something.

And that’s pretty much it. We’ll meet right in front of the media tent, and then probably head elsewhere from there, maybe by the tables under the nice shady tent (if there is one) or by the big FIRST flag when you enter the area. I’ll be volunteering at the media tent all weekend, so if we move anywhere from there, I will have signs at the media tent letting everyone know the where and when all these things are happening.

Now I know most people reading this are either thinking, “Dude, cool…”, or “Dude, you gots problems…” and are probably wondering how I’m going to do this, considering I’m not exactly with FIRST. Well, I see it like the web hug and FIRST-a-holics meetings. Just, um, with a little more activity than coming together, saying hi, and taking pictures. So hopefully our art ring wont be broken up by FIRST officials. We’ll have to wait and see, I suppose…

So any thoughts? Comments? Questions? Anyone excited about this strange attempt at community building?

Don’t forget the Web Hug (the meeting of all ChiefDelphi users at 6pm on thursday)

See this thread: Web Hug thread

Seems so far that there really are no conflicts on MY end. But some others, well… The Autodesk class goes on at 6. So I’ll be stopping by, bringing whatever arteest people want to come to the web hug with me, then we’re going to run off to the Autodesk class.

Other than that, the robot poetry, painting and draw session, and drum circle are just general fun times to come by and participate in something, um, different at FIRST I guess. I just always see so many people running off into the parks rather than coming to FIRST for FIRST nowadays, and it’s usually the people who don’t have a big hand in the robot. So I do eventually hope to be running a few events at nationals involving FIRST for these people.

So see you at the web hug. We’ll bring by whatever drums, art, and neat poetry we come up with throughout the day. Well, that is IF anyone shows up <please, oh please, oh please>

Super Fast Haiku Flash:

Ah to be at FIRST
So many geeks in one place
So few mountain dews

(BTW: Just so I’m not upsetting anyone, yes I do consider myself a geek. I drool just as much as anyone when a faster processor is released and keep my tabs up on slashdot. I just happen to be influenced heavily by the performing arts, das all! B^).

Well I and most likely our whole animation group will be there. Can’t wait till tommorow when we leave for Florida.

No one’s, uhh… really interested in painting murals with words or tempera, eh? Gosh. Shoulda probably figured that out to begin with… ::looks sad and kicks a rusty, empty can::

Well, I’LL still be there. Reading robot poetry. And painting robot murals. And being a sad little drummer boy all by myself… ::sniffle::

No! This isn’t a sympathy plee! I understand. I’m too weird for FIRST. ::looks from behind loud hawaiian for sympathy::.

Well, it’s worth a shot. Here’s to me keeping my fingers crossed. And hopefully some weirdo’s like me will join in the silly efforts to bring art into FIRST.

I will be there reading poetry and painting, have no drums for a circle but i can keep a beat with a borrowed drum, maybe we could add guitars and such for rousing good time, you should probably pass out flyers to each pit area, That would probably ensure someone coming, each team has the artist guy that everyone knows and they’ll pass it along to him or her. by the way should we bring our own brushes or will you have some for us, or we could maybe even use the brushes God gave us, our Fingers! ok im just rambling now. See you on arteest day.

Yes! Bring guitars and other instruments for the drum circle type thingy! I myself only have a small beat drum. But I DO have kazoos!

Flyers will be passed out, and I will have a few tempera paints and some brushes as well as a few markers and such, but bring whatever mediums you feel you would like to create with - charcoal, pencils, markers, conte crayon, oils, chalk. I picked up a nice roll of 48"x50’ paper for us to decorate, so that should be fun. But if anything wants to bring anything else, feel free to do so.

This is a group get-together event not really sponsored by FIRST, so I dont think there are really any limits, as long as we observe Gracious Professionalism with our works, everything should be fine. So just show up in front of the media tent, and if we decide to move anywhere with MORE SHADE, you probably cant miss us, and we’ll have posters at the media tent to let y’all know where we are. Ta til then!

If we dont have a practice or fatal robot failure there will probably be some of us from 212 there we have a pvc pipe band we are bringing so we will come out to the drum circle. We will atleast come out with djembes and digiridoos if we can.

Andrew

Is what I got. I said shout out to Sublime…

Okay, so here’s what I’m bringing up:

  • Pencils, Pens, N Markers(greyscale).
  • Brushes (foam and bristle)
  • 50’ by 48" roll of paper
  • 6 Tempera Paint Colors (White, Black, Green, Red, Blue, Yellow)
  • Mixing Bowls.

Any other supplies people are bringing along? Just being curious. And how many people are planning on joining us in this? Just post a quick “I am” if you plan to do it and have nothing… or maybe I’ll just make a quick poll. Yea, that’s the ticket. So what are y’all bringing?
