Would 148’s 2018 buddy climber break rule I101. Specifically does it count as a major mechanism that allows for robot movement?
That’s actually a tricky one.
The buddy climber in question required material from 148 to add onto the liftee. But, given the material was COTS, it wouldn’t violate I101. It would require I104 compliance.
I’d almost certainly rule it “in compliance” for 2024 (it was definitely legal in 2018; the rule wasn’t adjusted for Major Mechanisms until 2020). That said, I would be rather cautious with HOW the additional material added on was supplied.
(Bold emphasis mine)
Looking at the language, 148’s buddy climb should be allowed under I101 imo as it doesn’t accomplish anything really without the assistance of another robot.
