Has anyone successfully used the Rev Robotics I2c joiner board to connect two I2c cables to extend the color sensor cable length? Has anyone found an alternative solution? Rookie coach here. I did search here and Google. Please be gentle.
could you provide a link to the board that you are having trouble with? Also if possible all the other things that you are using with the color sensor (not as important but it will help to help us get an understanding of what your circuit is looking like)?
These 4-pin JST joiner boards are used frequently in FTC with success.
You may need a 4-pin JST extension cable for going from the joiner board to the Color Sensor.
If those are the cables that you are using an option if you are feeling comfortable with it would be to cut the cable and splice in another cable in the middle. If you ask me I think it is a better idea because if done correctly it is a lot harder to separate than the connectors on the board.
I don’t have any trouble yet…I am considering using the rev board but was looking for an alternative I can possibly obtain quicker using Prime. I just know that my I2c cable is a few inches too short.
The friction fit is pretty solid. A small ziptie can also be used to hold the joiner board in place.
Soldering is also an option.
I read in several places NOT to splice because I2c was only meant for short distances like one meter without using pull-up resistors which is what I assume the joiner boards are doing?
So the two options (that I can think of) that you have are the board and splicing in a length of wire with some soldering work to get it to that length. If you have the wire and supplies to do it AND you feel comfortable and/or confident with doing so do it. Otherwise feel free to buy the boards and the second cable (if you need it but if not feel free because spares are always a good idea)
Thank you. This is what I have been looking at. Just wondering if Rev is the only source. It is quite a process placing an order through a public school system.
From what I can see the joiner boards do not have pull up resistors. @Michael_Kaurich would you know if they do?
how long is your cable currently
It came in the KOP. I would estimate 30cm
about how much further does it need to go?
About 12 inches more.
you should be ok then. if your estimate of 30cm is correct than your cable would be at about 1 foot and then with the splice or board and other cable it would be about 2 feet. The maximum length for I2C is 1 meter which is about 3 feet (and change but decimals). So you should be good to do either option
I have to correct myself. I think my original is more like 1m already despite what the online reference lists. I would measure but I am at home. I guess I will order the joiners and an additional length of cable to be safe. Thank you for your time and advice.
yea no problem. Let me know if you need anything else. Just send me a pm or @ me in here and I will do my best to help
