IMPORTANT FIRST EMAIL BLAST/ FIRST Appoints New Executive Director - A Message to the FIRST Community From John Abele, Chairman of the Board

Greetings Teams:

Over the past several months, FIRST has been in the process of seeking a new Executive Director of FIRST. I am pleased to announce the successful conclusion of that process.

The search committee of our board conducted a thorough process. We took care to define the skills and character necessary to lead the FIRST organization. With that definition as a guide, we worked with a firm recognized as a leader in recruiting senior management talent for non-profit organizations. When the process was complete, the board’s decision was unanimous.

I am very pleased to announce that Paul Shay will be the next Executive Director of FIRST. Paul is a seasoned, capable leader and brings extensive experience in managing decentralized, volunteer-driven organizations serving young people. His skills working with educators, sponsors, government agencies and schools will help guide our continued growth. Paul joins us from AFS Intercultural Programs, Inc. where he served as president. Prior to that he built a successful 20 year career with Canada World Youth including the last seven as Executive Director & Secretary.

It’s not only work experience that makes Paul ideally suited to lead FIRST. His two sons are FIRST team alumni and Paul was an active FIRST volunteer. He understands, first hand, the power of FIRST.

On behalf of the board, I would also like to express sincere thanks and gratitude to David Brown. Five years ago, FIRST asked David to provide leadership, stability and management to an emerging organization. Today FIRST is a vibrant, growing organization with remarkable strength in each of those areas. David’s talent, commitment and integrity will continue to serve him well. We thank him and wish him the best.

I look forward to Paul’s joining us officially in January 2004. In the meantime, David Brown will continue to lead FIRST in this exciting time of transition and growth.

Please join me in welcoming Paul and his family to the FIRST community.

Does anyone know what team his sons were on?
