We searched the list of motors that First allows you to use but they seem to all have very little torque. We have other motors with the torque we need but they aren’t on the list and a gearbox would be really expensive.
Is there any motor with a considerate amount of torque (30-40 Nm) legal to be used for FRC?
Or will we have to buy a gearbox?
I don’t have the motor specs in front of me, but the typical FRC team will utilize gearboxes ranging from custom designs to using products already sold by vendors such as VEXpro, AndyMark, banebots, etc…

Off the top of my head, I don’t think there is an FRC legal motor that by itself can supply 30-40 Nm without a gearbox . You can check the approved list of motors in the game manual and double check each one, but I really don’t think any of them do that without additional gearing.
You pretty much have to use a gearbox with every FIRST legal motor. A few of them come with integrated gearboxes, like the window motor, snow blower motor, or Nidec motor, and those offer increased torque at lower speeds.
30-40 Nm is a lot though. You’re going to need to buy a gearbox.
The highest torque FRC-legal motor has been the CIM for many years at about 2.4 N-m at stall. The NEO is about the same. To get 30-40 N-m, yes, you will need a gearbox or other reduction such as belt or chain. Note that at stall, motors heat quickly, so if you need that torque for more than a few seconds or at any speed, you will need to gear down more than the 12-17 you might otherwise think.
