Indexing Power Cells

I have heard and seen in the FIRST Capital Ri3D that when two cells are pressed against each other, their friction prevents them from rotating. How much of a factor is this in ball storage design.

I was also wondering how easily a non-spinning cell can slide along different belt materials (i.e. poly, KoP chassis belt).

The ball storage design is really up to you, but I mean they tested it against polycarb in the same video and it didn’t move. This means that you’re going to have to power both sides of the storage/feeder/indexer to get them to move properly without getting stuck.

Thoughts on having two belt runs, powering one, and ratcheting the other so that it can not backdrive?

No real benefit to this, you should just power both sides.

Look into twisted polycord runs. Belting in a figure 8 to help you achieve this quite easily.

I’ve never done what you described so I cannot confirm it, but I think that it would lead to two balls touching and rotating in different directions and then get stuck.

The problem is not that the passive side can move the other direction.
The problem is that the passive side causes rotation in opposing directions in 2 balls in contact with one another.
Again the design is up to you, and prototypes are the way to find out.

The safest bet is to power both sides.
