I was wondering what the people on CD like to do outside of robotics, so I thought I’d just ask.
Me personally, I like being a motorcycle racer, playing the electric guitar, sewing and upcycling clothes, crisis counseling, video production, studying Latin, combat sports, and being an art school student.
Archaeology. Over the years I’ve unearthed everything from Roman shoes, to mass graves, to live WW I munitions. Also deer hunting. And I’m on a quest to catch as many fish species as possible. Sort of like being a “birder” but you end up pursuing a lot more minnows and weird bottom feeders.
Pinball. Oh boy do I love pinball. Every week I go to my local arcade to play for an afternoon. If I could I would also play in tournaments, but they’re always when I’m working or at bars. Other than that I also play drums a bit, I’m not too talented though.
Web Dev, VR programming, Python and Arduino experiments, playing trading card games online (Pokemon and Magic: The Gathering), binging sitcoms, playing with my pet(s), adulting.
I have alot of interest in getting better at adulting and it seems like my other interests get in the way… This includes robotics.
Edit: Some videos, links to projects. I also left out my obsession with Douglas Adams and the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I have his autograph and one of every trading card in the set that was produced. I have all the books and comics and my first ‘major’ VR project was a Douglas Adams VR museum.
At one point I made a smartwatch app for tracking life points in Magic: The Gathering. It was my first project on the google play store. It’s gone now as I closed my developer account because I hadn’t used it in years, but learning about how to make my own code on some new piece of hardware keeps me entertained.
Baseball, but not for the usual reasons as I just can’t get into following athletes or celebrities. I really like to keep a scorecard of games I watch, which I’ve found to be fairly uncommon. You can think of it like scouting an FRC match for fun.
I have also been interested in F1 more recently thanks to HAAS sponsoring FIRST and teams. (Excited to see Haas scoring points and Bearman looks good for next year). It’s kind of neat that they’re both having a major change coming in 2026.
I enjoy traveling, taking photos, wandering around the city, taking trains around town, studying cities, trying new foods, going to board game nights, cooking for my friends, etc. I may go back to school for a masters in Urban Planning some day. I have a Bachelor’s of Architecture, which I don’t use, but I think it would be fun to formally study urban planning.
Hard to find any stock car racing this side of the country (got covid the day before the only NASCAR sanctioned event in WA this year, rip) but hopefully going to Portland next year for the Xfinity/ARCA races.
Sorry F1 fans, but the only trains I like to watch are real ones.
