Introducing FMA+

Hello FIRST Mid-Atlantic teams:

The 2020 FRC season, INFINITE RECHARGE, has taken a break for the foreseeable future. If you’re like us, you suddenly have a lot more time on your hands and aren’t sure where to go from here. We’re as anxious as the rest of you to get back to robots as usual.

While we wait, we’re wondering about all of the amazing robots within FIRST Mid-Atlantic that have not been given the chance to truly show their stuff. We don’t know what the future holds, but we know what we can do right now: showcase some of the awesome work our FMA teams have put into their robots this year to “rise” to the challenge.

Introducing… FMA+, a weekly webcast featuring Libby Kamen (Team 1923) and Jeff Bunca (Team 747). The show will feature teams from our region explaining their robots and what they are most proud of about this year’s build. Whether INFINITE RECHARGE is behind us, or just beginning, we want to make sure that all teams get a chance to show off what they’ve achieved this year.

FMA team main contacts have recently received an e-mail with more information regarding how to sign up and participate. Teams outside of FMA, we’d love for you to tune in as well!

Stay tuned to the FIRST Mid-Atlantic YouTube channel for our premiere episode on Saturday, April 4!

Special appearance by the FMArtian maybe?

This is awesome, and thank you to FMA for getting on board with it as well. Can’t wait to see it!

Just wanted to say a big big thank you to the FMA Board for helping harness this enthusiasm.

The Mid-Atlantic Discord, like a lot of FIRST social spaces, was all “F’s in the chat” and “rip my season” when the announcement first came out - and I want to really shine a spotlight on the group of mentors who recognized this was an opportunity to turn this really awful situation into a positive. While everyone was (understandably!) upset, the mentor channel decided - yep, we’re sad, but what can we use all this free time on? …and the FMA+ concept was born. I’m really inspired by the drive from the rest of this crew for telling team stories.

We pitched to FMA - turns out they were already thinking of doing something similar, and it was serendipitous that we were already content planning. They were happy to support it on their official channels, and we can’t wait to get it off the ground. We hope this will be a chance to stick together even when we can’t see each other, and to celebrate the season in the best ways we can.

Just an important note: This is for EVERY TEAM, regardless of ‘done-ness’. If it’s a napkin sketch of the robot you wished you’d had time to build? Heck yeah. CAD model to take us through? Sweet. Finished reveal? That’s great too. We want to make sure everyone gets the chance to tell their story!

If you have questions, or want to know more - please feel free to ask in this thread, or on FMA Discord. We can’t wait to see what our teams bring to the table and we’re so, so excited to be able to honor your work with the attention it deserves.

The FMA+ crew is getting stoked for the premiere episode this weekend. While I can’t share our list of teams just yet, be prepared for an exciting group ranging from rookies to multiple past district champions.

If your team is interested in participating, get in there! We don’t care how “done” (is anyone ever done?) your robot is or if you’ve taken the field before. As @Libby_K put it, we want every team to tell their story, regardless of what chapter their story is in. We passed 30 applications this morning, but are excited to get even more!

Stay tuned for more details about our premiere episode!
