The Victor 883 Motor Controller, revolutionary for its time, was the first product ever designed by Innovation First. Nearly twenty years later, the Victor SPX is the fifth generation of motor controllers designed for the FIRST® Robotics Competition. Designed in collaboration with CTR Electronics, the Victor SPX is 10% smaller and 25% lighter than the Victor SP, making it the smallest and lightest motor controller in FIRST Robotics Competition history.

In addition to PWM, this next generation of Victor now supports CAN. The Victor SPX also brings over many of the features from the Talon, including voltage control and closed loop position control.

CAN motor controller with closed-loop position control for $50? I’ll take a few!

This is huge. 6 motor SRX drivetrains now cost $160 less.

Another amazing product from Vex. Our 2018 robot will definitely be sporting multiple SPX’s.

This is amazing. The only bad thing about it are the permanent wires, which I personally think are an anti-consumer design decision, but for $50, this is probably the best motor controller out there.

All competitive motor controllers minus the Spark have that feature.

We put andersons on the motor output and wire the PDP input directly to the PDP. Has saved hours of wiring and makes the controllers very easy to re-use. I’m a huge fan of the permanent wires.

It is very pro-this-consumer!

Does this mean we’re going to have some sort of differential control mode for Talons now? Cuz that would be dope.

I just did a huge Vexpro order yesterday…good thing I didn’t do any speed controllers…

I generally steer far away from early adoption, so I won’t be reccommending my team buy these for 2018. But I am very encouraged by yet another low-cost speed controller with increasingly large functionality being on the market. The speed controller marketplace for FRC is terrific right now.

Early adopters, please share your stories of this motor controller as they start rolling in!

Hold up… could these be used as slaves to an SRX that has an encoder plugged into it? That would be huge IMO.

Follow mode - allows Victors and Talons to follow each other

Even if they are not as flexible as the TalonSRX, looks like they will be able to save some real money in a multi-drive setup – use the Talons as the master, and Victors in follow mode for the 2-4 slave drives.

That was my thought/question as well. For a drive-train or multi-motor mechanism, you could potentially get all the functionality of an SRX at a reduced price*

*Assuming your ganged motors didn’t have substantial current differences due to some wiring or mechanical issue

As far as I can see/remember, the only sensor that interfaces directly with the CAN bus is the Pigeon IMU. Does that mean it is impossible to use the SPX in closed-loop mode with an encoder?* Or should we expect to see breakout boards that add an SRX data port to the CAN network?

The voltage compensation mode is a great addition for the extra $5 over a SPARK, but I’d really like to play around with closed-loop control.

*edit: without having it slaved to a Talon SRX
