Iowa District Points 2019

Inspired by similar theoretical district points threads, I decided to make one for Iowa.

While Iowa is much too small to have a district championship, an Iowa district would likely send the top 4 to 5 teams to the North Half-championship based on its size:

  1. 525
  2. 967
  3. 7785
  4. 3928
  5. 6455

The current teams that qualified for the championship are:

  • 525 (Win & CA)
  • 967 (Win)
  • 3928 (EI)
  • 6317 (CA)
  • 6455 (Win)
  • 7531 (RAS)
  • 7785 (RAS)

Iowa has had a great season so far and I expect Iowa teams will represent the state well at the Championship!

Please post if you have any questions, corrections, or other Iowa team statistics.

I’m looking forward to seeing all the Iowa teams in Detroit!

One correction - 7411 is one of our rookie teams and should have the rookie bonus. They had a great robot and are off to a great start.

Thanks for the correction. I think I mixed up the number cutoff for team age in my head.

Do you think that a potential Iowa District is possible? If there were more than 3 teams in Nebraska, would it be possible to combine the two states to make a Silicon Prairie District?

It would be an interesting idea, maybe it could be run as an experiment for a year or two with an event in Des Moines and an event in Cedar Falls. Like OP said, there might not be a DCMP due to size, though I think we could get away with one if we did only 4 playoff alliances. Every team in the state would also have to show up at both events, unless some provision is made.

Realistically, I think Iowa and Nebraska are going to have to piggyback on another state when the time comes. I think Iowa could go with Illinois and Nebraska could go with MO/KS, but I think most teams here would prefer to go with Minnesota, so I have no clue how that’s going to go down.

In the theoretical case where Iowa was a district with no district championships, how would the three championship qualifying awards be given?

They could be announced at the last district event if every team is going to be there, or a week later in a separate awards ceremony to give judges (not sure how we’d get judges without a competition, but that’s a question for the 2037 FIRST in Iowa board) more time to determine who’s the best in the state.

It could be interesting to try to pursue an Iowa (+other state(s)), especially as surrounding Midwest areas look to be heading to districts in the future years. However, there currently is a fairly low team density which would present a challenge towards getting enough teams for events. I would anticipate having at least two Iowa regionals before steps would be taken towards a district, and that seems a little far off in the future. I would love to have the state in the district system as I think it provides some great benefits to teams, but it seems a little unrealistic within the next few years.
