Is it necesary to pick up hatch panels off of the floor

If your alliance spent the whole time collecting panels, I think so. But you also need to climb at the end, place cargo, spend time lifting to get to the 3rd level of rocket ship etc.

What if a hatch cover is dropped on alignment reflective tape? Wouldn’t teams that rely on vision extensively want to be able to move the hatch cover??

I think the difference between the gears and the panels are that you’re not driving across an entire field to get another one if you drop the one you’re attempting to place. You also won’t have vision obstructions in the middle of the field blocking driver sight.

Floor pick up of the panels doesn’t hurt to have and I’m sure many teams will find a way to incorporate it.

I think panels on the cargo ship will be less desirable…you only get ranking points for complete rockets. People will be wanting at least one complete rocket before putting panel #1 on the cargo ship.
My opinion.

Hrench, my thoughts exactly! You also can capitalize on your opposing alliance’s failures, as a team playing defense could easily pick up hatch panels that were dropped and then taken back to their side of the field.

But one robot could drop six in a row at the input station. And then there’d be a mess–wouldn’t it be nice to be able to clean it up?

After multiple failures I think the strategy would have to change. Other drive coaches would stop that team from collecting hatch panels.

@Tesla_XK if you preload cargo ship with cargo, you can get 25 points in sandstorm. Then you go to rockets after sandstorm, get RP then last 3 CS you would get 70% of all possible cargo/hatch points. The best order is to go CS, Rocket 1, CS, Rocket 2.

Picking up floor panels will most likely be more important in qualifying matches, when the robots aren’t always able to successfully place/hold panels. However, the usefulness of picking up floor panels will probably taper off after reaching states/worlds, when the robots are of a higher quality.
As such, it’s likely that picking up floor panels will give you a higher rate of success in the beginning, but not necessarily the end.

This is the first pick and place game since 2007 with no safe zones around the placement. So I suspect there will be plenty of half hung hatches that eventually fall to the ground over the course of the season. Therefore for specialists, a ground pickup is a necessity, IMO.

Stealing dropped opponent hatch panels may not be as easy as you think, as you can’t extend anything outside your frame perimeter when on the other side of the field.

I agree. With the ability to steal gone it is unlikely that ground pick will provide a consistent advantage during later stages of play.

I wonder how many rocket hatches will pop off (especially if they’re half hung) when putting/forcing cargo into the rocket, especially the second ball, pushing on the first one.

Keep in mind that robots on the other side of the field must stay inside their frame perimeter

Keep in mind that there are bumper slots for the loading station which should make it easier

I’d answer your question with this question. Do you see an advantage of going 5-10 feet and picking up a dropped hatch from the floor over going 20 feet to pick up one from a loading station?

Week one:
-Teams dropping hatch panels everywhere
-Alliance runs out of hatch panels
-" Oh no… "
-Panic Ensues
-Alliance partner flies in playing Fortunate Son
-Picks up all hatch panels
-Win the match by 2 points

TL;DR
Yea you should probably be able to pick them up

Picking up gears off the floor was crucial because your human player could place one on the field in that orientation. Here the Hatch Panels will enter the field in the one orientation every time, which also happens to be the same orientation that they’re scored in. If the human players could drop them on the floor, then floor pickup would be useful.

The FTC game Ring It Up was very similar to this issue. Teams scored rings on a tic-tac-toe board. The rings started on pegs almost identical to the pegs that they would need to be scored on. Top teams didn’t have floor pickup because there was no need for it.

I really want this to happen despite the team being fully aware of the foul it would draw and deciding to go for it anyways

At the start of 2017, we thought “there’s no need to pick up the gears off the floor… people won’t drop them that often…”

My gosh did that come back to bite us real hard
