Is it possible to slow the piston

Is there a way to slow down the release speed on a piston? Is is all or nothing? We want the piston to expand slowly with less force.

If you put a restrictor fitting on the “vent” side of the piston, it will move more slowly with less force. You can also try adjusting the pressure regulator to use less than 60 psi, but the solenoid valve probably needs at least 20 psi to function properly.

I dont know if the restrictors are still included in the KOP, they used to be several years ago. The just have a screw fitting that you turn in to slow the flow of air.

any idea who would supply that part? thanks

They’re called air flow control valve fittings.

Parker and others make them.

Automation Direct is my preferred supplier for Pneumatic components just because of the massive selection, here’s a link: http://www.automationdirect.com/adc/Shopping/Catalog/Pneumatic_Components/Flow_Control_Valves_-_Speed_Controllers

The various speed reducers are on that page, pick the one that best suits your application and you should be good to go.

AndyMark also carries reducers as well, so if you’re ordering from them already you can toss one in without too much hassle: http://www.andymark.com/product-p/am-2032.htm

You also recieved a few of them in your KoP this year.

thanks everyone! have a good build

Just remember these valves will slow down the cylinder but will not reduce force. As squirrel said, the only way to reduce force is to reduce the air pressure or use a smaller diameter cylinder.

you can put a secondary pressure regulator on to reduce air pressure, the one to use for that is the one with the yellow ring.
