Like the title says, I may have just missed it but Karthik does that talk nearly every year and i just didn’t hear about one this year. Anyone else heard anything? (Also just gonna subtly @Karthik)
Unfortunately by the time I decided to attending Champs, the window to submit conference proposals had closed. Thus there was no opportunity to present Effective FIRST Strategies as part of the conferences. In 2019, I also did abridged versions of the talks in both Houston and Detroit as part of the FIRSTtv Beyond The Bots coverage at Champs, but that programming didn’t take place this year.
My plan is to be back at Champs in 2023 giving this presentation, wherever it may be. If there are multiple Champs, I’m hoping to attend both. I did have a new topic planned for this year that I was really excited about; “How to make elims playoffs at Champs”. But I’ll leave that as a tease for 2023.
If you are itching for some older Effective FIRST Strategies content, here are some links to previous versions. (There are more kicking around online, but these are the most popular versions, I believe)
Thanks, Karthik. Now teams that didn’t make elims at 2022 Champs have another excuse.
How to make elims at champs.
1.Don’t display reliability issues
2. Make the auto points the big teams can’t make on their own.
3. Max end game points
4. Do something productive in teleop
My team(s) and mentors watch these talks every year, and it has improved our team massively!
each year we grow and learn we end up finding something new in the talks that we could be working on. Disappointed we couldn’t watch live at champs in 22 but Glad to see that a return in 23. Even more of an incentive to keep designing strategically, improving the program, the team, and the robot.
Robot Units (RUs) have become a common slang in our shop. “yeah but do we want to spend the RUs on that”, “it’s a decent investment of RUs but will we run out of season before it returns?”, and “I dont think we have the RUs for both of those”, and my favorite “based on where we are as a team this year I think we have enough RUs to do 4 things, 2 of those things are the chassis and drive train, our job today is to decide what 2 things in the game are the most valuable”
I would add
0. make it to champs
Wait wait wait I have some negative points here and they involve winning a regional or district event.
And I think we may be stealing conference material.

When your contribution shows up In Karthik’s presentation……
do your happy dance.
I won’t out my source, but a multi time world champion strategist told me this;
- be good
- don’t not be good
