As you can guess from the title, I wanted to see if anybody had any tips on how to find mentors specifically for programming that are based in NYC (Or even volunteer to mentor themselves). Team 4571 has gone through- and is still going through- some significant reforms and we have a boatload of dedicated members and mentors who were students previously. The only problem is that the only mentor who knows coding at an advanced level (PIDs, Trajectories, overall an excellent programmer) Is a college student with a job. For him his highest priority should be his own life which is why I’m looking for a java mentor who knows these kinds of topics well that can dedicate some time to teaching our students.
Hello. Although I don’t have tips for finding mentors, my team, team 694, is also based in Manhattan and we have a lot of programming members who can teach and assist with control theory (PID, feedforward), path following , and overall organized command-based programming. We are available to work with any number of members of your team for programming help over zoom and potentially work with your team in person because you guys are in the city as well. Hopefully we can help! (our team can generally be reached at [email protected])
That sounds wonderful, should i reach out through the email you provided?
Yes reaching out to that email works for now. We can find a more convenient method of communication over email. (also because I’m not sure if there’s private messages on ChiefDelphi)
There are PMs here. Click the username of the person you want to message; if they accept PMs you’ll see an option to PM. Or, when you reply to someone, click the reply arrow and change it to PM that person.
Back to your regularly-scheduled programming (thread).
I’m one of the programming mentors on 694. (The students know the advanced concepts way better than I do. I know everything there is to know about Java itself though.)
Every year, the older students on the team do an awesome job teaching the new students. I haven’t taught concepts in years. (I ask leading questions, make sure the kids are included, things aren’t going off the rails, anticipate what problems might occur, etc). We have a big programming group so I think they’d be great at mentoring your students as well.
I know you are already in contact with Myles. I’m just piping in so you know an adult on the team is aware.
Thank you so much for your support, I tried reaching to the email Myles provided but I just got a blank reply. I don’t know if that’s supposed to happen but hopefully we can stay in touch and organize something
They copied your email into the team slack so definitely received!
