I’ve been studying Kettering’s Onshape CAD from this year’s Ri3D and trying to understand the process they used. The CAD is found here. Is the method taught by some to the Onshape Learning Pathways? I’m interested in how they used the driving sketch to reference most of the features and then used derived sketches or parts in their other subsystems. I’m self-learning how to use CAD, and I’d be interested in properly learning the design method they used to streamline complex system design.
Hey! I was the designer for Kettering’s RI3D, so I feel uniquely qualified to talk about this.
Allen was spot on - both the top-down Onshape pathway and looking at other team’s document structures are great places to learn from (I particularly took a lot of my modeling practices from @cadandcookies Onshape tutorials; they’re fantastic resources).
While I’m flattered you’re looking at the RI3D document for structure inspiration, please don’t take it as gospel; a lot was done pretty sloppily due to the fact that we were on a tight schedule and I was the only one working in the document. In a normal season, I would have paid much more attention to separating the subsystems into separate documents, as well as revision controlling them all.
Hope this helps - I’m happy to answer any questions about why something was done (or why it shouldn’t have been).
Thanks Allen, I’ll take a look at the videos. I’m pretty sure I watched the D3.1 one last month when binge watching most of your teams videos as I prepared for the season. I think’s it’s what tipped me off that it might be a taught design method. Thanks for the quick reply and resources.
Thanks Nick. I appreciate the insight to the constraints you were under in creating your design. I somewhat feel like I’m in a similar boat as I’m trying to capture the students ideas in single CAD model to make sure it’s all going to “work together’” before we start cutting things and bending metal. I know the basics after playing around for a couple of years, but I feel like it’s taking me a long time to get an individual subsystem designed so I’d like to learn a more stream-lined approach. I’ll definitely look into cadandcookies onshape tutorials.
I’ve hosted a zoom course for team 2471 for Onshape using very similar design methods , I can give the recorded zoom links if you’d like on this thread. I haven’t had the time to edit the recordings into a more compressed and straightforward video due to the build season though.
The course was over 4 zoom sessions, designing a WCD. Sadly we didn’t get to everything I wanted to but we covered a lot of useful information. Hopefully the links work
