Kraken X60 Failures

Has anyone seen this type of failure on Kraken x60 motors? The rotating part seems to rub on the wires until the insulation is cut through and the wires short out.

I agree with Andrew. Please let support know. This looks like a failure mode that would be very difficult to predict, but potentially simple to fix and they would want to know about it.

We’ve had turn and drive motor failures on the SDS swerve modules. One was on an intake roller.

Have you disassembled the motors and confirmed the same failure mode on all three?

It seems odd that you would have 3 of these same failures when other teams have not reported them.

Yes, we find it strange as well. However, taking them apart is not very straightforward. I believe we have 6 bad motors but only took apart 2.

6 is a lot we made it through the season with none dying you may have gotten a defective batch

Maybe it was manufacturing or maybe it was application. We tend to drive our robots hard so it’s hard to tell from our point of view.

I can’t imagine hard driving being responsible for that, I’m not super well versed in Kraken internals but I’d presume that unless you’re putting insane radial loads on the output shaft, there’s no way for user error to cause the outrunner to contact those wires, so it’s likely a manufacturing error.

If it were a manufacturing error where a team had this high a fall out rate, you would usually expect a WHOLE lot more complaints from other teams.

We have some gut theories of what happened and this exact error/issue may have been designed out in latest change. But we are going to get the motors back, tear them down and root cause. Once we do that I’ll post back here.

This is so freeken cool!
It is amazing to see the first non heat related failure*(or maybe this is a heat related one). It is awesome to see some problem come up at all, nothing is perfect and it is nice that this new motor is no exception. It is also supper cool that WCP has already come upon this and fixed it behind the scenes!
*(The only other non heat related failure I saw was someone getting metal shavings in the cooling port but that is very much user error :laughing:)

We had the same failure. Further disassembly found that the stator had become un bonded to the core housing. This allowed the stator to rotate, which pulled the power wires into the rotor. In our case the this resulted in the rotor to lockup ( only be turned with pliers on the shaft)

Possible causes are over heating of the stator ( if epoxy gets to 130 C it is no longer “glue” ) or some contaminant on the bonding surfaces.
