Leadership Training Program for FIRST Mentors & Coaches

I was excited to hear the announcement at Championships about the Air Force Leadership Training Program for FIRST Mentors & Coaches. I wasn’t so happy to see that only FTC and FRC Mentors who are K-12 teachers are eligible.

Maybe the Navy will schedule something similar for non-K-12 teacher mentors. Then the Navy-Air Force football game could be followed by the Navy trained mentor teams battling the Air Force trained mentor teams in an off-season FRC event. The students and the mentors would have a blast.

This looks like a really cool experience for anyone that gets to go. Kinda bummed out that only K-12 Teachers get to go.

USAF Academy, Colorado Springs**, **CO July 9-10

This unique seminar incorporates 2 days of high level classroom discussions enhanced by team building exercises in an academic environment surrounded by examples of young leaders learning to face today’s challenges./

I thought this one was designed for the younger K-12 teachers.

Patrick Air Force Base, Cape Canaveral, FL. July 30 - 31

There is currently a launch schedule for 30 Jul 2012.

They get to see a rocket take off**!!!**

If they ever open one up to non-teachers (who in my opinion make up a majority of our mentors) I would sign up as would my mother. During the closing ceremony when they initially said for mentors and teachers I was super pumped to apply. When we checked the website and saw you had to be a teacher I was bummed.

I’m kind of excited that it’s only for teachers. I feel like FIRST puts little to no focus on teacher support or persuing a career as an educator. I wasn’t able to apply for any FIRST scholarships during my time as a student and even now as an alumni CT FIRST offers scholarships for only engineers. So finally being able to apply for something through FIRST because I’m a teacher is really exciting.

I was surprised that it was for only teachers.

Hopefully the 24 that attend can use their educator skills to share the knowledge they gain from the Air Force with students and mentors.

Has anyone heard anything yet about who has been accepted into the program? I submitted an application… Its almost 2 weeks since the deadline.
Thanks!

Good luck to everyone that applied!!

I believe the application form said invitations would be sent by June 9. I may have that date wrong, though, seeing as it’s a Saturday.

I think the announcement is made on June 19th.

OK it’s June 20th.

Anyone heard anything yet?

I saw @FIRSTweets RT’ed a teacher who had been accepted. I have received no correspondence yay or nay.

That was me! I got the email yesterday. I just had to fill out background check information and then they’re going to tell us where we go.

I guess that means I didn’t get in :frowning: Congratulations to you though! Be sure to let us know what you learn.

I know this was for mentors only, but I think a leadership program from the Air Force would benefit anyone, especially students in FRC.

I was lucky enough to get accepted for the Cape Canaveral program. Which one are you headed to Kettering?

Here’s the list.

I was lucky enough to get into Cape Canaveral too! I’m pretty excited :yikes: …I really hope their is a launch while we’re there!
