I know that a large percentage of the FIRST community is involved with FLL but if you are not - don’t miss it again!!

This is a tremendous program and it will bring tremendous results! The best way to grow FIRST is to increase the demand to such a level that it can’t be stopped. Thousands of young kids are now going to be looking for something else after LEGO. I’m not sure what is going to happen in Mountain Home in a few years - a town of 10,000 and we had 14 LEGO teams this year.

There were ten tournaments across the country this past weekend with six more coming up Saturday. If you are close to one of the remaining events I would strongly encourage you to attend and see what incredible machines these kids can build from a box of LEGOs!

Greg-

I would have to agree. The Huskie Brigade has begun 10 teams and we work very closely with 5 of them. (Who are also the FIRST H.I.T.- Huskies In Training). We hosted Battle of the Bots 2 this year, which we turned into a sanctioned regional (way too much fun!) and last weekend were a whole slew of events in the Detroit area. I am proud to say that at the Pontiac Board of Education meeting last night we announced that one of our teams has qualified for the state tournament on Dec. 16th at Univeristy of Detroit Mercy. We are in heavy preparation right now and expecting our team to do well.

If you aren’t into lego league, I would be highly inclined to say, your missing out!! It’s more fun that you could ever dream!!

I just went to the site for the lego league. That is so cool! I’ve never heard of it before now, but I think that maybe I’ll go watch the next one. The 16th at Detroit mercy, right?

Hey Katherine, if you need a ride, I could give you one- since you live in the same town as me and all. You would really enjoy it. It’s the best of the best competing here- definitely worth attending.

For anyone else in the Great Lakes area-
Info and directions are available at the FLL site. hope you can come!!!

: I agree it was incredible…Team 4 Merrimack NH (feeding team 166, hopefully) went to the firstever NH state meet last weekend…the kids are really excited and since I help our High School team, I share all the similarities so that the kids realize they are preparing for the next level.

For those who don’t know, the kids receive a problem and get 8 weeks to solve it, then at the meet there are 3 rounds of 2 1/2minutes to score points(5 different ways to score with varying difficulty), the top 16 go to the elimination rounds that are single elimination. Judges visit the pits to hear your story, teams vote for a best team, there are awards(lego trophies) for spirit, programming, best use of sensors, high score, presentation award, gracious professionalism award, mentor award and the top award is ‘The Directors Award’…same lineup of vips as judges, the head honchos of legos came out and Dean gave a speech comparing the 2 programs . Even a wrap party at the local Y for a couple of hours and a pizza party.

We made it to the quarter finals after dropping our robot and hurrying to get it reassembled…it wasn’t the same but we did win 1 round and lost by just a few points…

Overall it was a terrific experience and the kids are looking forward to what the future holds in high school with the big robots…it is a great mentoring situation for a FIRST team.
