Due to all of the Coronavirus TOXICITY that has been rampant throughout all of ChiefDelphi recently, I thought that it would be a good idea to post a thread that is more positive and lighthearted.
So, does anyone else in the community collect/own any Star Wars Lightsabers? Since this year’s game is sponsored by Star Wars, and it is fairly complex to actually fabricate the metal hilts of custom Lightsabers, I think that a discussion about Lightsabers is somewhat relevant. It would have been very fitting for an EPIC Lightsaber Duel to take place at Worlds, but it seems that the festivities may be getting canceled/postponed… (RIP)
If you do collect/own any Lightsabers (whether or not they are custom/storebought) please feel free to post any pictures or discuss your thoughts. Did you bring one to your competition or incorporate them into some aspect of your team? Hopefully, this will take our minds off of Coronavirus for the next few hours.
(If you didn’t know, President Trump is going to be giving a statement on Coronavirus at 9:00 Eastern today, so you may want to watch…)
Feel free to post whatever you want regarding Lightsabers here!
I was starting to fabricate one in my schools shop to take my mind of cancelled events before it closed today cause corona virus… BUT there was some epic lightsaber antics in crowd beneath the stands at PNW Glacier Peak during éliminations between 1318, 4180(me) and one guy from another team who’s team I can’t remember (I’m sorry guy from another team )
I was going to build a lightsaber at Galaxy’s edge but are school trip is going to get cancelled but I have another 6 at home, my favorite being my Darth maul saber.
I really want a yellow staff saber! I want one from Ultra Sabers but they’re not cheap. Sadly my parents won’t let me get it, so I’ll be waiting until I go to college.
The one problem with getting a yellow lightsaber (IMO) is that most people don’t know about Jedi Sentinels and would therefore think that it wasn’t Star Wars or that it was one of those random laser sword toys that people sell on the 4th of July.
I wonder how much it would cost to actually create a hilt yourself; it probably would be really hard to make it look good, but it would definitely be fun.
I got a purple saber from ultrasabers a few years ago; the problem I found was that it is a lot less durable than it purports to be. The sound has completely broken and it no longer turns on, which is sad since I took care of it and never bashed it around. Since I live outside the US servicing it is tough, so I have a lightsaber skeleton now. At least the hilt looks cool?
It is definitely possible to make a hilt yourself and make it look good. I’m a teacher and in one of my classes a few weeks ago, students actually made lightsaber hilts as part of a manufacturing project! Some of them turned out really great. They had access to a lathe, mill, and disc sander. They all started with a 10.5" long, 1.5" diameter piece of solid aluminum.
(I, of course, also made some, I can post pictures of those later. Observing the students’ work has let me know what works well, what doesn’t, and everything in-between.)
Now THIS is one of the best introductory lathe projects I’ve ever seen. Walk away with something totally useful and awesome, teach some basic lathe techniques and artistic thought process at the same time…
