We have a limelight 2+ powered with a REV power distribution hub and we are using a network switch designed by @marshall, the limelight works and was recently flashed to the newest version 2022.2.2 in an attempt to try to fix the issue. The limelight will stay powered and will work without the ethernet cable plugged in but the moment the cable is plugged in the limelight switches off and the lights on the ethernet port glow dimly. We have no clue what is going on here, we tested the cable and it works fine the network switch can communicate with all the other devices on our robot, and the robot functions as intended just no limelight.
Can you post some pictures of your setup?
Have you tried it with a different ethernet cable? What about without the network switch?
We have tried different cables and the same result, a different switch worked but it’s too big to replace it with it. What we dont understand is why the rio can communicate fine and seems to not be affected
Yep… this is weird.
What if you plug the limelight ethernet into a different switch?
Is it possible you are also providing power over the Ethernet cable? I know my team is powering our limelight over POE.
It did work with another switch, but the switch is too big to fit. The rio works perfectly fine which is weird
The cable we are using is not capable of providing power, to my knowledge
What if nothing else is plugged into the switch other than just the limelight?
nope, we still see the same results. The limelight powers off the moment the cable is plugged in
What happens if you unplug the power and try just the Ethernet connection?
Ok… what happens if you unplug the power from the limelight but leave the Ethernet? Does anything happen?
Can you also loosen the nuts/bolts holding the limelight just to make sure this isn’t a weird case deformation shorting thing?
Nothing, the limelight doesn’t show any sign of turning on
Have you tried switching the port you plugged it in the switch? You could also try changing the order of Ethernet cables in the switch.
As funny (or odd) as it might sound, I’d give this a try. On at least one occasion I’ve seen some odd behavior with tightening & loosening mounting hardware. I haven’t investigated much more than a brief observation so I can’t say for sure that it wasn’t just a coincidence or user error, but it’s worth a shot.
On the team too, we loosened the mount and it still doesn’t work
How are you powering your radio?
The REV radio power module
So that’s POE and might be feeding or something to the Limelight. Try disconnecting that cable.
