I’m switching over to linux from windows and im looking for a few apps to install and though this might be a good place to ask. I need audio editing software, audio player (one that will work with my ipod), DVD/CD burning capability, video plaback and a few othersi know i need but can’t think of. I plan on using Suse and Linspire. Any suggestions?
Audio editing: Audacity
Audio playing: XMMS
iPod: gtkPod
CD burner: Gnome Baker
Video: Xine (or a player based off of it)
Most of them are Gnome apps, and I think those two distros use KDE as their desktop, but they’ll still run…
If it’s a newer version of Suse and you do a full install, you should get most of those anyways.
im going to uses suse 9.3 and linspire 5.0.59
K3B is the best buring program I know of. It will probably get installed with Suse. Totem is not bad for video playback but MPlayer is good with web browsers.
Is there any particular reason you want two operating systems?
To answer your question, though, almost everything you need will come with the installation. The difference between Windows and most Linux distros is at everything comes with the distro. No need to worry about installing the OS, then installing office, then installing Nero, then winzip, then whatever else. And almost everything will install without rebooting. 
I really hope that you’re using ‘everything’ very loosely, since I have yet to see a Linux distro with built in HATCH scoring software. :]
I dunno, while mine didn’t come with Hatch it came with 3, count em’ 1, 2, 3 audio editors similar to GarageBand.
Would you really want one?
Plus, given that this year’s scoring software was written in C#.NET, and relies on MSSQL server that wouldn’t happen anyways.
Audio editing- I’ll second Audacity . One of the best open source editors around.
Audio player- XMMS is nice, essentially an open-source Winamp. For library management and an iTunes-ish interface, look at Amarok. I’ve been using it for the past few weeks, and it’s incredible as a general music manager.
Ipod- Not sure, as I don’t have one myself yet (the Nano does look mighty tempting.)
CD/DVD Burner- K3B . Relatively easy to use interface (sort of like Nero), very capable.
Video Playback- Xine, Mplayer , and Realplayer. Between Xine and Mplayer, with the proper codecs installed they can play virtually anything. Realplayer is nice to have for steaming video/audio, and yes, the Linux version is less evil than the Windows version.

I believe the latest amarok supports ipod now.
