Looking for New Drive Station Computer

My team has been using the classmate E12 for years now, but it has come time to upgrade. We know that if you use too high of a resolution, the images from the drive station softwhere are very small becuase they don’t adjust the size of the bar to the resolution of the computer. What computers would you guys reccomend to use as the drive station that work standard (without having to run a virtual machine or modifying the drivers or code too much)?

Thank you!

Sorry about the spelling mistakes, I did not notice them before (spell check does not work for me on this page)

This just about sums up what you should look for.

I’m into computer hardwhere and know all of those requirements, I was just wondering if there are any particular models of computers that you have used and liked or just would reccomend. (Sorry for the confusion)

Unless you’re offloading vision processing to your DS, don’t sweat hardware performance. The DS software does not demand much from it. The bkahl list is fantastic.

With one caveat: Keep a browser on the DS, one which can run the Silverlight plugin. You may need to troubleshoot the RoboRIO. Stuff happens, and you may not have the time to fetch another system from your pit.

Part of your regular routine with your DS and any other computing hardware you bring to competitions is to update it a couple of days before you leave. Update Windows, update your browser, and check for updates to Silverlight, the DS software, Eclipse, the plugins, and the compiler toolchains.

I’d actually say that’s a bad idea. What happens if your update breaks something? You won’t find out until you get to competition, and the last thing you want to be doing when you first arrive is debugging an update that breaks your code. Aside from mandatory updates (like DS updates) and bug fixes (like the LabVIEW camera fix this year), my suggestion would be to update before the season starts (or when the software is released at the beginning of the season) and only update after that when necessary.

By all means, don’t update. Have fun when you run into that mandatory DS update during inspection and miss practice matches running around to find a live net connection to grab the 800 meg update. Or when some chucklehead plays games with MS17-010 on some net you connect to in St. Louis.

Does that sound like a lesser risk to you? Is that a productive use of your team’s time? Do you think that gives you an advantage, or your opponents?

I have a UHD screen and it works fine for me.

Whoa whoa whoa. I’m sorry if I offended you, I was just respectfully disagreeing. Maybe I wasn’t clear in my first post so I’ll try to rephrase what I was saying.

Of course you should download all mandatory updates (like DS updates) and important bug fixes. But IMO updating your JDK or eclipse plugins or other non-urgent updates to important software is risking it. The less I can change between my robot working at home and when I get to competition, the better.

(I kind of just said the same thing again but I don’t know how to phrase it any better)

P.S. - CSAs have all of the mandatory updates and firmware on a flashdrive if you happen to miss a DS or firmware update

P.P.S - If you’re connecting to random public wireless networks on your DS laptop then you’re kind of asking for trouble. The wifi adapter should be disabled at competition anyway, so it should only connect to public wifi if you specifically ask it to.

Do you know of any computer that meets those requirements for under say $1000. Just curious what some of the options might be.

Check this one out! https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Touchscreen-Convertible-Processor-Bluetooth/dp/B01EQVJJFK

Or this one: https://www.amazon.com/Premium-i7-7500U-graphics-Bluetooth-802-11ac/dp/B01MZIARUP

Both are under $1000 and cover everything you could ever want and need!
