What is the lowest ranked team after quals that you have seen go on to win the event? Either from this year so far or any previous year. I’m curious because our team was ranked 46th out of 60 in 2019 at the North Star Regional, we got selected by the #2 alliance and went to Worlds for the first time in team history.
I’ve been wondering something similar: How many 8th seed alliances have won events or even won worlds? I feel like it would be really rare considering the first seed usually contains the 2 best robots.
4818 was 62/63 at 2015 Lake Superior, was the first pick of the #3 alliance and won the event.
Different question from the OP, but easier to answer - the only 8 seed to win Worlds was in 2007 - 177-190-987.
2016 Curie was a “perfect reverse bracket”, meaning the 8 seed won the division, it was 7v8 in finals, 7v6 and 8v5 in semis, etc.
2014 CVR had 254 drafting the 41st and 43rd of 45 teams.
Kind of bummed 973 won a match saturday morning, would’ve been dead last otherwise!

8th seed alliances have won divisions at worlds, and a few regionals each year. It is not as common as the other 7 alliances winning, but still does happen occasionally.
Irrelevant to winning, pulled upset as 8th seed alliance captain in 2017 at San Diego making it all the way to the finals. Careful picks and strategy can go a long way
The second to last team getting picked at all is extremely rare, but as a first pick??? How/why did this happen?
In 2018, our team ranked 10th on Turing Field in Houston, we became the 8th seed alliance captain and ended up winning our division.
Relevant to this thread, we selected the 45th ranked robot as our 1st pick, the 55th ranked robot as our second pick and the 61st ranked robot as our 3rd pick.
Our scouting system picked these robots out of the mix as the most suitable partners.
Actually a great story of stars aligning. Week 1 event of Recycle Rush so everyone was still figuring out the game. We had a great stacker bot, in our shop we could make stacks of 6 totes and the can all day long. We get to the event and the can simply would not fit. Constantly jammed within the robot, completely disabling us. Go back to the pit and test with our can, everything works. Struggled all weekend, eventually decided to only stack totes, which we were one of the best at the event at doing. By pure luck 2526 was pitted next to us and watched all weekend as we reliably stacked in the pit. They were a landfill bot and needed a stacker. 3rd member was 93, who was really good at putting cans on top of stacks. Near perfect example of 3 unitaskers working as a team.
In 2019 we picked 271 out of 46th rank (out of 48) and won the event (FLR)!!
A hidden gem indeed!!!
This year they (271) were picked from 38th (out of 41) at SBPLI #2 by the 2nd alliance and made it all the way to the Finals!!
The #8 alliance won the 2017 Israel DCMP.
In the CHS Greater DC Week 1 Competition, 612 was 16/18. For our week 2 competition, we were 4/18 and made it to finals as alliance captains.
FRC 4 ranked dead last at a 60+ team regional in 2006 and 2007.
FRC 4 punched their Champs ticket both times. #1 alliance needed a defender.
From 2010 to 2020, only 16 #8 seeds have won events in all of FRC. Those events were:

395 won the 2019 Central New York Regional after ranking 31/31.
1807 in 2017. We squeaked in to MAR (now FMA) Champs as 60/60 in the district, the last seed. We went on a mad run there winning the first 11 matches losing 1 and then winning out. 2nd Alliance Capt. We went 17-1 that weekend. Won the whole thing with 2590 and 3929. First trip to Worlds in St. Louis. Our bot, no shooter, passive gear handler and a hell of a climber.
I believe 2017mike2 was the only time a rookie team captained the #8 alliance and won as well.
We were the 11th seed and we picked the 21st seed and the 41st seed (both of whom were better than us). Only alliance at that event that could triple balance.
I don’t know if it counts as you reffered to regionals, but our team 3075 in 2018 ranked in Hopper third to last (65 out of 68). We ended up being chosen by 254 and 148.
